At-large Selections. NEW FOR 2006. The track and field committee, with
approval from the Division I Championships and Competition Cabinet, has
adopted a new process for selecting at-large berths into the national
championship meet. After the automatic qualifiers (top five declared
athletes in individual events, top three declared relays based upon
regional performance) have been identified, the committee will place the
next seven declared athletes/relay teams (plus ties based on place) in
each event based upon regional performance into the national at-large
pool. Previously, only the next three declared athletes/relay teams in
each regional event advanced to the at-large pool.
So the bottom line on this (which I don't think anybody addressed) is that they have REALLY weakened the Regionals as a concept by making times during the regular season way more important than Regional placing than it was last year. Last year you basically had to be in top 8 in Regionals (tehre were a few exceptions) to make it to Nationals. With this expanded pool, it's going to go significantly deeper I suspect. Some post-meet analysis will be in order.
