  • Texas State Meet

The national list just got pretty heavily re-written in the boys class 4A long jump with three 24-footers:

    1 Parrish Cox Waco University 24-07.50 wind1.5
    2 Whitney Prevost Texas City 24-04.00 1.4
    3 Derrick Hall Beaumont Central 24-01.25 1.4

And the exciting thing is that this wasn't even supposed to be the great LJ matchup; that was going to be class 3A, which is going on right now. (Sadly, I have to be at work and can't watch.) Terrance Toliver vs. Denario Alexander, who just got bumped down the list from 2 to 3 and from 6 to 9, respectively.

    Live results are here: http://www.uil.utexas.edu/trackresults/index.htm

Have they announced the 9.76? If/when they do, I'd be curious as to the reaction.

Honestly, I'd be surprised if they mentioned the WR. The folks who run UIL have never really struck me as the types to be interested in goings-on in Qatar, but maybe I'm not being fair. My impression has always been that for them, it's all about what goes on in the Great Republic of Texas.

Bret might be a better source; I think he may already be at the stadium. I can't get there until about 6pm.

Ha Ha. No chance of a WR mention. I was there all day and barely heard the announcer at all. Hell, the UIL is still under the impression that Henry Neal set the WR with a 9.9 handtime back in '90.

Oh I'm so glad you mentioned that, because I spotted something in the UIL program this weekend that is just the ultimate example of how goofy high school governing bodies can be (goofy enough that I really think this merits mention in the magazine, if I may be so bold):

In the 200 meters, the UIL program lists the national record as Roy Martin, 20.13 (set at the state meet in Austin). But it also lists the state meet record as Roy Martin, 20.24. Yes, that's right: The 20.13 and 20.24 are THE SAME PERFORMANCE. You see, for many years the UIL kept its official state meet results in hand times. However, for the purposes of record submissions to the national federation, they also used FAT. So the official time of his race in 1985 was a 20.0 (which they recently officially converted to a 20.24). But the national records they print in the program are taken right out of the national federation's record book. So there they are, one right on top of the other in the program:

Nat'l Roy Martin (Dallas Roosevelt, TX, 1985/Austin, TX) ..... 20.13
State Roy Martin (Dallas Roosevelt, 1985) ...........................20.24

As for Henry Neal's 9.9, there's also some weirdness in the program. Oddly and without explanation (which no doubt confuses the fans) it is listed as 9.9--10.14. The other converted marks have an asterisk referring people to page 31 explaining the conversions, but that mark does not. And it seems to be the one mark they did not pull directly from the national federation -- the NFHS book lists his time as 10.15, which I assume is the the FAT they sent in.

Oh well, at least they're being somewhat reasonable now on the superiority of FAT to hand. I was once witness to a very silly argument where a UIL official insisted that some high school boy would have to run a 9.89 before Neal's record could be erased.

Okay, enough bitching. HOW ABOUT THAT MILE RELAY! Hell of an exciting race:

            1 Fort Bend Marshall 3:11.99
            2 Round Rock McNeil 3:12.26
            3 Arlington Bowie 3:12.80
            4 Houston Cypress Falls 3:14.40
            5 Klein Forest 3:15.90

If you didn't see this story on our frontpage the other day, UIL has changed its records policy (no idea what it will do to the Martin situation)

Great great meet. martin was actually there to present medals to men and women 200 meter medallists. The men's 4x2 was incredible as the houston Eisenhower team won the 4x1, a few minutes later won the 4x2 in National record time and then a few minutes later placed 1, 2 in the 100.

The 1:24.10 may be an NR by restrictive national federation rules, but T&FN recognizes the way-faster 1:23.31 by Ft. Worth's Wyatt in '98 (at the Golden South meet as I recall).

yeah, as I said -- it wasn't mentioned, as far as I know. Maybe they did while I was at work, but not while I was there. However, I will give a thumbs-up to the Austin American-Statesman, for once: They put it on the front of their sports section and even had a teaser on page A1. Really nice to see a pro track story on the front that wasn't about drugs. (Well, not totally, anyway -- they did make mention of some of Trevor Graham's previous pupils.)

So there were probably 20,000 in Mike Myers Stadium yesterday; how many in Waco today for the last day of the Big 12?

Oh yeah, I timed some 4x4 legs for some of you splits geeks:

                              Girls 5A:
                              Fort Bend Marshall 3:40.05
Carmen Michell 56.2, Candyce Cross 55.3, Cyne Wardsworth 55.4, Brandi Cross 53.1

It was the battle of Fort Bend. Fort Bend Hightower was pretty close until Brandi Cross put the hammer down on the anchor. FBH ran 3:41.27.

                              Boys 5A:
Sorry, I didn't get the winning splits (Fort Bend Marshall, 3:11.99). I took 2nd-place Round Rock McNeil's (3:12.26) splits instead: 49.2, 47.5, 48.8, 46.3). It was a pretty tight race between the first three all the way. Third place (Arlington Bowie) ran 3:12.80.
