    assuming that's at sea-level, that's a 9.98 basic, which isn't bad !

    if he'd "only" had a 2 m/s wind, that becomes ~ 9.89 !!

i think the basic time is certainly a "pb" & he is legitimately a current world top 5 runner over 100m ( behind gatlin, fasu, safa & lenny )

I am surprised the kid from Texas, who says Jesse Owens was nothin', doesn't pick up on this and say that wind is overrated and 9.76 is 9.76 regardless.

I think it was ..."these great high schoolers today could beat any of those guys from the 30's".....I believe that to be very true. Look at any sport and you'll see bigger, stronger and faster athletes involved. There are high schools with two/three 10.50 types on their 4x1 teams. Sooooooooooo many sprinters! There were but a handful back in the time of Jesse Owens.

For his time Owens was great! He however would not rule today under any conditions/circumstances.

He's also a great long jumper to boot.

OK, you can post on this board again when one of those HS guys LJs 26 1/2 feet (with legal wind). Until then, you have to not write a word about how much better they are then Jesse Owens. (Oh yes, maybe they should do it on a dirt track while competing in four events. However, rather than having to do those four events in 45 minutes, we will give them the whole afternoon to accomplish their mastery of Jesse Owen's legacy.)

I think someone should give this punk a replica pair of the shoes that Owens wore, take away his creatine, put him on a cinder track and time him in the 100 meter dash. I am certain that he would have a new-found respect for Owens after he looked at his time.

                    EL Paso

The meet is at UTEP's Kidd Field and I could not find the exact elevation there, but a mean elevation in EL PASO is 1126 m (3695 ft). Nevertheless, a good run, something he'll be able to tell the grandkids about. And based on form, he could well end up being NCAA champ in a couple weeks.

                    Here's a quick IAAF bio

A 9.76 with 6.1 m/s tailwind at altitude is meaningless. What would Gatlin have run yesterday under those same conditions? 9.45!

you've got the digits reversed, it would be 9.54 ((6.1-1.7)x0.005 sec/0.1mps), at least that is what I remember. It is still a great time, altough I had forgotten about 1000m altitude also.

It's about an 0.3 differential at that altitude with that wind. Don't forget that this is the stie of the fastest 100 in history, Oba Thompson's 9.69 with a wind somewhere over 5mps.
