    I'm not about to do any research and memory refreshing over this thread, but I must say that one that pops into my mind right away was the 5,000 at the first World Championships in Helsinki in 1983, won by Eamonn Coghlan.

    The race in Paris this year was excellent, to be sure.

    Again, no time do the work to cast an intelligent vote on number 1.

      Ah, yes. The '83 5k won by Coghlan. It was certainly a memorable finish, what with Coghlan sprinting up the homestretch alone, smiling and practically jumping for joy. As I recall, however, that field was viewed as relatively weak (I don't have time to go dig up the old issues for the facts!). I can't even remember second place. I think it was a bespectacled guy from Russia? I do know that with 200 to go, Eamonn put him away quick and the mystery was all gone.
