What Div. I dual meets are there left?

Here's the duals that I know are still around:

Cal-Stanford
UCLA-USC
Washington-Washington State (revived this year)
Montana-Montana State
Indiana-Purdue
Harvard-Yale
Arizona-Arizona State-Northern Arizona (okay, it's a tri, but it's an annual fixture)

Any others?
Oregon didn't have a single dual this year. Bummer.

Lehigh-Lafayette is one of the great collegiate rivalries in all sports, and they still have a dual meet. This year, the Lehigh men won 104-99 and the Lafayette women won 103-100. I wasn't there, but it must have been a great day of competition.

Army and Navy meet in dual meets in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track on an annual basis. Last month Air Force was added to the women's outdoor meet, making it a triangular. Although Army's Jerry Quiller would like to add Air Force to the men's outdoor meet as well, Navy will not agree-- infer what you want!

Maybe it's because some people still think of you as the Army Air Corps instead of a separate branch.

I wish dual meets would make a comeback. It's good for the spectators and it translates better to football/basketball/baseball fans becuase it's one team vs. another with a final score at the end. It's also good for team's travel budgets.

you know what else was good about dual meets ?

For the athletes themselves ( anybody remember them ?! ), particularly the non-elites, dual meets were FUN !!!

And in a close dual meet, fighting for those 3rd places was important. Truly built "team spirit" from top to bottom. Your best sprinter cared about the performance of your 2nd or 3rd best shot putter !

Does anyone think that the new regional format will encourage more dual/tri meets? Since the athletes with NCAA aspirations won't need to chase big marks to get there, I think it can't hurt.

There's a ranking system out there that is based on overall team competition.

Coaches won't change, unfortunately. Most top-level DI schools are still doing the same thing. No imagination. I'd like to think that they'd take the opportunity to run more duals or relay meets, but I think they'll just try even harder to make sure their athletes have a performance near the top of the lists to ensure an auto-spot at nationals.

This may be a hijack of the thread, but someone brought up the point of NCAA regionals, and something occurred to me at a college meet this weekend. I am VERY in favor of the regional format because head to head comp.=good, mark chasing=bad. However, I must say that I'm not sure the regionals have eliminated mark chasing. Sure, at the very highest end of the sport it has-but look at the just level below the highest. After almost every race, the PA man informed us of how the time measured up to the regional qualifying mark. I would suggest that the regional format has not decreased mark chasing- it has just changed who is chasing marks.

Absolutely. Penn Relays had more entries in the individual events than ever before. But the top-level entries were down. Schools were watching their budgets. And if the school's top shot putter was already qualified and was likely to get only three throws, the school brought its No. 2 thrower instead, or #3 or 4.
