The agent conveniently fails to mention that a fair chunk of Liu's income goes to the agent!

"Liu's agent, Mark Wetmore, says Liu keeps about 70% of his track earnings and more than 70% of his endorsement fees. The remainder of the money goes to the track federation and Shanghai sports system that has nurtured him since he was about 12.

Liu uses an analogy he figures a Westerner familiar with Chinese restaurants might understand. The money is like a dish at a Chinese meal: It's passed around so everybody can get a portion."

Speaking of agents, it brings to mind one of my favorite memories from Atlanta 1996:

I was leaning on a rail watching the men's 400 medal ceremony, and a kid (about 12) next to me says: "My dad is Michael Johnson's agent -- and is HE happy!"

We all were, my son. We all were.
