All I could think of for the Shot Put is:
"I Shot the Sheriff, but I Couldn't Shoot the Deputy" and
Johnny Cash's "I Shot a Man in Reno Just to Watch him Die..."
How come nobody has written a song that people can group-run to-
you know, like the Army has it's various left-right ditties (see the Bill Murray movie Stripes for takeoffs like Doo Wa Ditty Ditty)...
And elite Olympic rowers always have "Row Row Row Your Boat" to fall back on....
Say, in the "Fours", what happens to oar synchonization when they begin singing Row Row Row Your Boat in rounds?
I can just see the coxwain going nuts!
Here's a decent one from Dan Fogelberg (you always have to have somebody who's done you wrong to make it a classic, right?)
Well I`m a runnin` down the highway
Got the road beneath my wheels
Said I`m runnin` down the highway
Got the road beneath my wheels
Ain`t nobody in this whole wide world
Who knows the way I feel
Said my woman up and left me
Left me for some other guy
Said my woman up and left me
Left me for some other guy
You know I never understand it
Though I try and I try and I try
Well I`m a runnin` down the highway
Got the road beneath my wheels
Said I`m runnin` down the highway
Got the road beneath my wheels
Ain`t nobody in this whole wide world
Who knows the way I feel
I remember a couple years back in the UK, 400m athlete (and notorious poser) Iwan Thomas released a version of "Keep on Running" (originally by Spencer Davis). Needless to say, it peaked at around number 1,376 in the charts. His excuse was "it was for charity".... he must have raised all of £27.50!
I would say that he should stick to running, but he hasn't been doing much better with that either!

I also forgot to add that he can't sing for Peanuts!!
When your wings no longer catch the wind
Your wheels are throwing sparks from concrete on the rims
And when you've run so long and you run so hard
Feeling every stone beneath your feet
As they repeat that when you run, you run alone
And when your dreams are all just flashbacks
And you're crying beneath the wise cracks
I've been here before and there is no more
And when you've run so hard and you're worn so thin
You find that losing's just another way to win
Then it's time for you to begin
To be wings, to be wheels
And to know how it feels
To be you on your own
'Cause when you run
Oh, when you run
You run alone
And you know you love the game
Like the river loves the rain
A sidewinder loves the plain
So you can't complain
No one hears and no one cares
That the road you're going
Doesn't get you anywhere
You're the one who put it there
So why not go and chase the sun
That's one race that just can't be won
But at least you have begun
To be wings, to be wheels
And to know how it feels
To be you on your own
'Cause when you run
Oh, when you run
You run alone
And the opening verse from Jethro Tull's Budapest always created a wonderful vision for me.
Budapest
I think she was a middle-distance runner...
(the translation wasn't clear).
Could be a budding stately hero.
International competition in a year.
She was a good enough reason for a party...
(well, you couldn't keep up on a hard track mile)
while she ran a perfect circle.
And she wore a perfect smile
in Budapest... hot night in Budapest.
