  • Willie Gault's 10.72 WR rates national AP

Today in Indianapolis, Willie Gault today ran the fastest 100 meters ever by an M45, clocking 10.72 with a legal wind of 1.0 meters per second, and beat a field of M40s to boot. Willie's mark not only beat the listed M45 American and world record of 10.96 by Neville Hodge but also trounced the M40 American age-group record of 10.80 by Aaron Thigpen at last year's Hawaii masters nationals! (Of course, Willie ran a 10.79 NWI and 10.80 earlier this season, but who's quibbling?)

On the WMA Age-Graded Tables, a performance of 10.72 corresponds to an Open (ages 20-30) equivalent of 9.884 seconds.

The Associated Press quickly moved a report on Willie's record run. Within hours, more than four dozen news sites had posted the AP report, including the Seattle Post Intelligencer, the Chicago Tribune, Forbes, SI.com (Sports Illustrated), MSNBC, CBS News and the San Francisco Chronicle.

Together with his hurdles clinic on ESPN a year ago at the Carson nationals, the movie actor-businessman has now been the star of two masters exhibitions

    Saturday's results:

    Off topic, but . . .

I've not been at the track for the morning or early afternoon sessions, but all the sprint and hurdles have been wind-hindered for the senior champs. Is there a point each day when the wind turns around from being an aiding wind to a hindering wind?

And if he weren't a former Super Bowl player he wouldn't have gotten an inch of coverage. Pathetic.

Almost as pathetic as eating up time in the stadium yesterday interviewing Benny Brazell, who has given up track for the NFL and has zero connection to the state of Indiana.

It swirls. They ran the dec hurdles on the backstretch... into a headwind.
