    Re: 6-minute mile

al lawrence the bronze medalist in 1956 has 3 great books with a lot of excellent information. but if he is still coaching and believes a 23.8 and 52 quarter are adequate to prepare someone for a sub 4 minute mile, why not take some of the girls who can run the 200 and 400 times and train them like a miler, if any female could do the mile training and run sub 4 they would be in the history books forever, and bring fame and fortune to themselves and their coach, and a lot of attention to the sport, i hope it is given a try.

My interpretation would be that it's NECESSARY to run 23.8 and 52 to be able to run a 4-minute mile. It's not necessarily SUFFICIENT. Obviously some people will only be able to run these times training as sprinters, and that doesn't make them capable of going sub-4.

I think they mean you are "ready" to train for a four minute mile if you can run the standards listed. While training for a four minute mile many runners will beat those standards easily.
Remember many who run a sub 52 second quarter mile may never run a 4 minute mile because they lack the strenght to do so.

Re: Can an average man run a 6-minute mile

A few years ago an overweigh 16 year old joined my cross country team. He had never participated in a high school or recreational sport before. He could not jog more than 5 minutes when he began. At the end of the season he ran 25 minutes for 5k. He was proud that he ran a 6.50 mile in PE. The year before it took him 11 minutes. In the early spring he ran a 2.40. He disappeared. He returned the next winter because he wanted to get in shape for the Navy. He worked hard. He ran 59, 2.19, and 5.20. The question is-Is it too late for a 30 year old to transform his body?

Re: Can an average man run a 6-minute mile

what is the fasted sub 6 minutes to body weight ratio?

by that i mean, what is the fastest someone has gone at a certain bodyweight?

i know that most athletically enclined people could lose weight and run sub 6 or close, but could a 240 lb guy run a sub 6 carrying that weight?

is there a calcualtion to approximate what a 7 minute mile is for a 240 guy? i.e. a 7 minute mile equates to a 5:30 mile if he were 170?

I am interested because i am 240 and can run 7:30 mile. i had previouly ran 5:20 mile and sub 19 min 5k in hs. i am over 30.

It would probably help to know the weight of the 240-pound guy.

I'm sorry, I meant the HEIGHT of the 240 pound guy.

and that 7:30 is for 2 miles average. I think i could probably do close to 7 flat if i was only doing a flat mile.

then i would also need another half mile to slow the train down :]

It's never too late to improve your condition. At the age of 31 I couldn't go 8 miles; at 32 I was running Boston.

If you can run a 6 minute mile at 60 then I will be impressed.

Bigdude... get hold of Dale Harder's Strength and Speed book. The ordering address is on a couple of threads on this site. It has lists by size for every track event, just the stuff you are interested in. Some percentage of the data has to be pure unmitigated BS but you'd still find it interesting.

while I'll never run a marathon, I think I'll take this 6 minute mile thing in hand. If nothing else training for it will get some of these extra pounds off. When I ran that 1500 in 5:08 I was 5'11" and 147 lbs. 17 years later I am 6'1" 210. At my fittest I was 6'1" 175. Don't think I will get back to 175 but 188 is achievable. Should be able to break 6 then.
why don't people pronounce vowels anymore

I'm just wondering how you guys actually plan on running miles. Gotta be almost impossible to find a track that's not metric, so I suspect that you'll cheat and run 1600s instead!

A good way to test your mile speed is to go to a flat street and measure a mile with your car's odometer. To mark each quarter use a landmark. Make sure the street is relatively flat so you don't hurt your knees. New Developments usually have flat streets and you can use objects like mailboxes or drainages ditches as quarter mile markers.
Have a friend pace you with a bike. If he has a speed odometer on his bike tell him the pace you at the desired speed. When being paced by a bike a 6 minute seems a lot easier. I usually ask the pace bike for 10.2 mph speed.
