That's pretty sad. Every runner/hurdler on my team can break 6 minutes for the mile. That's a snail pace. I'm a decathlete, so I have to have speed and carry extra weight for strength. I've run 4:55 for a mile.

Sorry. I guess it is pretty sad. I probably would have been cut from your track team. I guess I didn't realize how slow I was. I still think six minutes is tough.

Abinferno is a decathlete. Every successful decathlete I have known has been a fabulously talented athlete and also at least a little bit nutzoid. I would bet he under-estimates his own natural ability vis-a-vis "an average man", and I bet he has also way over-estimates the ability of some of the other sprinter/hurdlers on his team in regard to running a mile.

Whatever String. You're just pissed because I kicked your @$$ on Tiger Woods Golf the other day. Also, I ran a 10.45 100m last May. You're only a 10.5 guy..

              Slowpoke!

Six minutes is still pretty fast for a mile.

<If took the average 25 to 35 old guy off the street and supplied him with top coaching and training could he run at least a 6-minute mile? Does a 5 or 6 minute miler have some genetic talent or is it possible for any reasonably conditioned person to break 6 minutes for the mile.>

To reply on a personal note to the original posting. At an age of 27-29, I ran a couple of one mile "races", without any specific track training. Times were 6:15 to 6:25. I played tennis, golf, badminton, fairly regularly, was about 1.79 m and 75 kg. So, based on my experiences, I have to say, it should be possible to go sub 6 minutes for an average 30 year old of reasonable health, with some proper training.

A few posts above someone mentioned that over weight posters need to run the mile. If you want to lose fat and gain health and fitness running "the mile" (in 6 minutes or any other time) is not the answer. Spend at least 30 minutes getting your heart rate up to 60-70% of maximum. You pick the aerobic activity and go easy so you can do it at least 3-4 times per week. Then gradually increase it to an hour. Give yourself plenty of time to lose the weight (fat)--not more than 3-5 pounds per week.

"Can the average jackass run a six minute mile?"

Hasn't this silly thread gone on long enough?

As to the question, since apparently W can run
a six minute mile, I would say the answer is yes.
