  • Asafa Powell set to run in Lausanne on Tuesday

World and Olympic 100m champion Justin Gatlin has pulled out of Tuesday's meeting in Lausanne.

The joint world record holder, who has been accused of avoiding his sprint rival and fellow record holder Asafa Powell, has a knee injury and is not set to race again until the end of the month.

Organisers are trying to secure the participation of Jamaican Powell, who has twice scorched to the record 9.77sec mark, instead.

"Gatlin still has a knee injury. He will certainly not run in Europe before the end of July," said organiser Jacky Delapierre Sunday.

I am negotiating with Powell's entourage who were already planning to come to Lausanne, although not to run.

I hope Asafa breaks the record, im sorta gettin fed up of Gatlin puuling out of the races which Asafa is entered in. Injury? it all seems like excuses 2 me. I believe he is afraid that Asafa might upstage him.

      I believe Gatlin IS hurt.
This is almost like last year in reverse when Asafa was hurt. I don't think Asafa should change his schedule.
why don't people pronounce vowels anymore

I agree with both of your points.

You might want to re-read ALL of the initial post. Gatlin is not pulling out of a race that AP is currently in. Of course, the thread title is also misleading.

This is a quote from the article:

"The pair are still due to meet in Crystal Palace on July 28th in an eagerly anticipated match-up, their first since the same meeting a year ago when Powell pulled up with his groin strain."

Are they still slated to meet in London??

The article here says neither of them are running in Lausanne tomorrow.

Originally, AP was not in this meet at all, but since Gatlin pulled out meet-directors got AP in the meet. Therefore, Gatlin did not pull out of a meet that AP was in...but that is neither hear nor there. I do believe Gatlin has a slight injury and I believe that his camp is playing it smart. They will not put him head to head against Powell or anyone else for that matter if he isn't 100% or close to it.

i'd be shocked if safa runs in lausanne

last week, when gatlin pulled out of athens, safa refused to replace him as he said " he ain't a substitute for nobody ! "

this is the same scenario a week later - why woud safa now accept the substitute role ? ( ok, leave out the money answer )

Obviously I hope he runs. The incentive is rather large: whichever of the two sets a new WR automatically shunts the other off into the shadows. They have a huge incentive to find the perfect conditions and break the current WR tie. Actually, its been years since weve seen this sort of incentive to run fast, as often as possible...

                        He's not running:
"Asafa felt that his body is a bit tired after his Paris Golden League win in 9.85," confirmed Paul Doyle, Powell's manager. "We had not scheduled Lausanne. It takes a lot on his body. The groin is healed but his body needs rest. The meeting organizers have been very nice to Asafa and did much for him but three days between Paris and Lausanne is too short. I confirm that he will compete in Rome next Friday and then Stockolm."

That should take some of the sting out of those who were saying JG was making up the injury. Running times like they are means

                          a. they are pushing their bodies towards limits rarely tested.
                          b. they are running on very hard tracks to achieve those times. The harder the track, the more abuse the body has to absorb.

I can't believe AP can continue to run 9.8s week in and week out on the GL/GP circuit and NOT come up injured again. Especially with his history. They'd both be smart to save themselves a little more for the showdown, whenever that might be.

That's true, I just hope that it happens before someone busts an achilles or a hammy. For once can we see a decent rivalry in T&F pan out for longer than a couple of years? I sincerly hope it does since they are likely in or nearing peak form unless one of them pulls a 91' Carl Lewis later in life.

???? AP had the WR to himself for a while. JG was hardly in the shadows during that time!
