  • Borzakovskiy's last 400m 48+

Winning time of 1:46.6 with a 400 split of 57.70 (he was not leading).
This must have been one of the quickest last laps ever in any race over any distance. I know Kipketer once ran 52/50 for a 1:42. Dan, can you help out on this one? That's one hell of a kick down.

    Re: Borzakovskiy's last 400m 48+

In the men’s 800m the talented Yuriy Borzakovskiy was up again against the finalists from the World Championships in Paris, and his even-paced race left him with much to do down the home straight, as he chased down Kenya’s Wilfried Bungei, who had taken the field through 400m in 51.99. For the pleasure of the crowd, Borzakovskiy began his usual late dash for the line, just edging ahead of Bungei at the finish, after a 54.68 last lap. A time of 1:46.67 may not be spectacular but the 30,000 crowd loved the run nonetheless.

So what was the real 400 split? The meet's own website said it was 57.70. If that is fiction, what else didn't happen? Maybe the whole meet was made up.

          I'm not Dan.

But I do ,however, know that the Fastest last/final lap of a Men's 800m race is 50.5s by Steve Ovett.

Borza's fastest ever final lap of an 800m race is around 51-52sec.
I'll have to find out for sure...

When did he do that? I've never seen negative splits for any of his sub 1:43 races. It would have been big news if he did indeed run those splits.

I'd also like to see some facts on the Ovett 50.5. Not saying it didn't happen, just don't recall it, and I've come to depend on this board being long on facts and normally shy on unsubstaniated claims.

Ovett ran the last lap in the 80 Olympic final in 50.8. He actually ran better than the guys in the 2000 final in Sydney. Kipketer never ran a negative split 1:42 race,

The leader in the 1980 Oly 800 hit 400 meters in 54.55, according to my tape.

                  Ovett won in 1:45.40

Ovett was not the leader at 400, and was a few meters off the lead (at least), so I'd imagine he ran the last 400 in closer to 50.5 than 50.8 (according to UK TV with a last 200 in 25.2)...

Anybody know Coe's splits in the same race? Or Cruz' in '84 for the last 200 or 100?

fastest last lap in a fast 800, that I know of, was 50.3 by Kipketer in a 1:43.38,'97 WCh. Even faster may have been... Herb Elliot! - unofficially 50.5y (=50.36/m), '58 Br.Comm.Games (1:49.3y). Anyone know of last 200 times faster than 25.29?(Kipketer, unofficially, 1:41.73). Maybe Jose Parilla? I remember watching '92OT race, having seen results, and thinking the paper must have had the wrong name, he was so far back with 200 to go. And Borzakovsky in Sydney semifinal - before easing up, he must have covered 590-790m in about 24-flat.

Back in 1958 Herb Elliott stepped down from the Mile (which he also won at the meet) to run 880y. He won a tactical race from Brian Hewson in 1:49.3. Not very impressive. But the first lap was 58.8, meaning the second was 50.5 (i.e. 50.2 for 400m). On a cinder track. 45 years ago, but still very impressive running

                        T&FN splits for Ovett in his 1:45.4 in Moscow were 27.2, 27.4 [54.6], 26.5 [1:21.1] 24.3, so halves of 54.6 and 50.8.

                        In same race Coe goes 27.3, 27.4 [54.7], 26.7 [1:21.4], 24.5 for 54.7/51.2.

The first 7 all had significant negative splits in that race. Clearly, as part of their chicanery in that meet the Soviets had an adjustable track and they shortened it for the second lap! :-)

Hmmm.. perhaps you're confusing that with another race. Kipketer's breakdown in Athens was 49.68/53.70.

Garry, if there's a track the Soviets wished they could have shortened for the last lap, it would be the Munich 800 8 years earlier for Arzhanov !

I have found many split times for 800m races.
