  • What's Left?

The track season is just about over, excluding S. African/Australian 'summer'. I see on the gbathletics calendar that there are two 'big' meets left - All-African Games and Afro-Asian Games in October. Certainly those meets can't attract top-tier athletes?

    Probably not: http://www.vanguardngr.com/articles/200 ... 92003.html
(Note the amounts Marion Jones apparently takes in every year.)

"According to a NIKE published report on the American athlete Marion Jones, the new mother earns in excess of 600 million dollars from the US Track & Field, another 900 million dollars from the clothiers and there are other endorsements running over 500million dollars as well."

Wow! I had no idea Marion was making 2 billion dollars a year!

Note that the paper is published in Nigeria. Imagine the e-mail solicitations Marion's going to get once Sonny Njubi, 13th illegitimate son of the former head of Nigerian Offshore Oil, forced to flee to Luxembourg, NEEDING TO TALK TO HER IN COMPLETE CONFIDENCE, reads about her wealth!

Maybe we shouldn't be talking about T&F athletes not making enough money... ;-)

Well, they may not ATTRACT top-tier athletes, but the All-African Games, at least, can help CREATE them, thanks to the IAAF's flawed World Rankings system. The AAG is rated on a pair with a GP I meet or the Commonwealth Games, and is a class above the USATF Championships!

Everybody who believes these numbers, raise your hand. Poor Grasso, he would be a pauper next to Marion.

Aplogies to you poor souls, who have to winter over.
Now that the International track season is over, us low southern hemisphere track fans have a short while to reflect how good it was, before focusing on the local track scene.
Our local track meets start in two weeks time.
                  Oh the endless summers
