  • Tergat on Geb

From John Manners' excellent interview with Paul Tergat posted on Runners World online (see it in its entirety at http://www.runnersworld.com/home/0,1300 ... WS,00.html ):

RWD: What is your feeling about your many confrontations with Haile Gebrselassie?

PT: I have a lot of kind respect for Haile, a real gentleman. And as a competitor, I respect him as a true fighter. I have really enjoyed my competitions with him. We both know that any time the other is in the race it is not going to be easy. But when we meet outside the competition we are all friends. In the big championships on the track or in cross country or the marathon, sometimes luck has to be there. Regardless of what you have done in training hard, sometimes everything still has to go right, it has to be your day. In this sense, you could say Haile has been lucky, but don't think that he won anything easy. He has always worked very hard for success.
