  • Masters Performers in All Areas in 2003

Where to begin? Andres Esp (40) runs a 2:08 and change. Eddy Hellenbeck (43) runs 2:12 and change. Eddy also has a 14:14 (5k), 29:05 (10k), 48 (10 miler), etc,... The Kenyan (42) Kipn?? runs even faster than Eddy. On the track, the T. Young kid (41) runs the 1500 in 3:46 and change. Even the old man Ed Whitlock (sp?) runs under 3:00 hours for the Marathon.

Bottom line is don't let age be an excuse when it comes to competitions. I'm Inspired, how about you?

Have you noticed that a lot of the top master 1500 meter runners were not necessarily top notch runners when they were in their prime. Maybe they think they have something to prove later on. Runners like Scott and Spivey are probably satisfied with their careers and retire with noting to prove.

I love to keep up on the younger/open runners for sure. There really is no limit to these World Records. But, what the talk around my running/pub bud's is "Can you believe this old fart ran $%^& !!!!" I think us older Baby Boomers need more of this stuff!! What will 2004 produce?

I see masters progressions much like I saw/see those for women. The data bank of performances are only now beginning to show themselves. For years we didn't know what were good performances for those over 40 because few continued to seriously make attempts. The marks that we presently are impressed with might be quite average once we have a larger pool of participants in which to compare. Of course, they might be fantastic efforts. The point is, until there is a larger data base, we simply don't know for sure.

We'll find out in 11 days whether 54 year old Nick Bdera of NYC will qualify for the 2004 OT in the 50km RW.

Eddie H just ran a 1:05 half marathon after running a 2:12 marathon, last week!!! And I hear alot about this Martin Rees (in his 50's) running some incredible (John Campbell/Bill Rodger type) times!! This Geritol Group is defying their bodies declines. Well done!
