            Money is the most important.

You can't buy a house with a medal.

Actually, you said "more" not "most."
              Either way, duh, a medal.
Who is more highly regarded, a successful road whore or an Olympic gold medalist? Why do all the great athletes who have never won gold have that rap against them? "Yes, he won a lot, but he never got a gold medal." Why did it trouble Clarke? Why did it trouble Morceli from '92 until '96? Why was has it been such a monkey on El G's back? Get Olympic gold and so much endorsement money will follow that buying a house or anything else wouldn't be a worry. Pre is not as good of an example of knowing which is the greatest prize as Viren was.

Chase the money, perhaps miss the medal. Chase the medal, developing the complete athlete needed to achieve it, and the money will come.

Don't quite follow the Pre reference. What money did he not take? Don't say the ITA, becuase he would have taken a cut in pay over what he was making as an "amateur" had he joined that circuit.

...in other words, how many students can afford to buy an MG and a house?

BTW, anybody out there wonder how important finishing 4th in the Olympics is...? Or being known as a frontrunner willing to push the pace?

                        Money.

Bob Hayes and Jim Hines both won gold medals in successive OG (Bob in '64 & Jim in '68), both in WR's, both 'killing' the comp.

They could of stayed in track and revelaed their true talents.

                        But they went to NFL.
                        Why???
                        Because it pays the bills.

Gold medals are nice, but they don't pay the rent.

For the sake of Bob Hayes and 'ol Jimmy Hines,
                        I'd say MONEY...

I understand your point, but the Hayes/Hines example doesn't fit with today's environment.

Today you can make a very comfortable living as a top runner (with top being the operative word; the 20th ranked American miler makes basically nothing).

In the 60s you really couldn't. Hayes and HInes, despite being the best, didn't really face the choice that the originator of the thread posed.

I am not trying to be obtuse here, but why can't you have your cake and eat it too? In this 2003 campaign, the serious medal contenders were plying their trade on the Euro circuit, making whatever money was available. Plus your medal makes you marketable in the next indoor and outdoor season. Merchandise contracts go to medal winners.

More important in what sense? As an end in itself or as a means to some other end? These days no Olympic gold medallist is going to be poor. Not even close. What is the point in starting a debate over whether career earnings of 2.8 million $ is more desirable than career earnings of 2.3 million plus a gold medal? I agree with whoever said it is a STUPID question.
