So this was a 5k? And he ran 17:44? Yeah, it definitely looks like he's headed to the Olympics next year.

Who obviously knows nothing about running if he thinks 17:44 is anything at all to even talk about out loud.

              Re: Jonathon Gill 5K Results

It is an very good High School varsity time. It is equivalent to running a 4:39 mile.

I will give him the benefit of the doubt and say he is probably a 4:19 miler.

.......2 minutes later as I look for the book "The Self Coach Runner (1987)".

According to the "table to determine best distance" a 17:42 5k is equivalent in ability to these other distance times.

              100m - 12.2
              200m - 25.0
              400m - 57.0
              800m - 2:13.8
              1500m - 4:39.9
              3000m - 10:10.9
              5000m - 17:42.7 *
              8000m - 29.18.6
              10000m - 37.14.8
              20000m - 1:18.21

A well conditioned 5:00 minute miler should break 18.00 for the 5k.

According to the mercier tables it is equivalent to a 5:07.61 mile. It is also the equivalent to a 2:55:43 marathon. That's the ticket! You seem to be able to plod away at that event and still impress people because you are on your feet for a longer stretch. He should switch events.

                  Andy,

Did you even read the table? 4:39 for the 1500 does not equal 4:39 for the mile.

17:44 is not a very good high school time. There are plenty of junior varsity meets that have faster winning times.

                    Re: Jonathon Gill 5K Results

The 4:39 mile was my first guess. I then looked up the table and saw that his 17:44 is equivalent to about a 5:03 mile.

Whatever the time is this whole thing about Jon Gill was a big put on. I wonder how foolish the writer of that original article feels. I love the part where Gill says Webb is not fast enough and he is going to kick his ass.

Gill has become the nations most famous 5 minute miler!!

And thus endeth the speculation about Mr. John Gill. A 17:44 in October will NEVER translate into a time that will even get him near the Trials. Now can we get back to the Sasquatch-Yeti-Bionic Man match race?

And Webb has been annointed the US's most famous 4 minute miler, so what about the other benchmarks?

I presume that converting his 21 - 22 minute 5kms, Dubya could run about 6 minutes, so I'll give him the most famous 6 minute miler title.

What about 7, 8 or 9 minute milers? What does Oprah's marathon convert to?
