  • Update on Webb's coach

...had to get his name in the title.

"Scott Raczko, the high school coach who gained fame for mentoring track star Alan Webb, said he will resign when the cross country season concludes next month."

Webb is not setting any records on the track, but he is sure setting records on this forum.

It looks as if Webb and his coach are headed to Oregon.

            Jeez....

Webb's coach seems like a wacko!

Any bets of how long Webb will stay with him when he has another crappy season?

Maybe he is a genius wacko. Webb has called him the "best coach I ever had". He left Michigan for this guy.

That may be more of an indictment of Michigan than anything else.

After all, Webb has had two coaches in his life: Raczko and his Michigan coach.

One of the two coaches he has ever had must be the best coach he's ever had.

It's not like he has twenty coaches from whom to annoint the best ever.

                  Re: Update on Webb's coach

When it comes to producing distance runners coach Warhurst is the best America's has to offer. You could say he is the cream of the crop in a defective college system. One of his main accomplishments is producing the last US distance runner to get an Olympic Medal. Brian Diemer got a bronze in the 1984 Olympic Steeplechase. Also he coached Kevin Sullivan, arguably Canada's greatest distance runner, to a 3:50 mile and an international ranking.
He has also coached notable American stars such as Tom Broe (US indoor 3000m record holder) and miler Brian Berryhill who had a breakout year in Europe this year. Foreign runners like Nick Willis from New Zealand have also seeked out his services. Willis who is close to Webb's age has already upset both Jason Lunn and Berryhill in an European 1500meter race. This young star is already gotten his 1500-meter time down to 3:36.
There is also Canadian Nate Brannen who is progressing nicely and has run a 3:57 mile and a pretty fast 1:46.6 800meters.

All these young runners under Warhurst's guidance are doing better than Alan Webb is now. This is especially true of Nick Willis who most likely will be representing New Zealand in the next Olympic Games. Warhurst warned that Webb would run into problems as a professional. You can't argue with 25 years of coaching experience when making this summation.

Warhurst has proven that when it comes to producing 4-minute milers nobody is better within the US college system.
Under Warhurst's guidance I don't doubt Webb would be running a 3:34 1500 meters by now.

Andy that could be the case but it didn't turn out well for Webb when he did run there, so maybe it was the best thing for him that he left.

Completely wrong! Lynn Jennings got a silver in Barcelona in '92.

Bullcrap! Michigan's # of sub-4's is nowhere near the best in the NCAA. I guarantee you Bowerman had at least twice as many sub-4 milers as Warhurst has. McDonnell is better, too.

Burst appendix and all? Are you Warhurst's mother or what?

If you read the new Webb book, it sounds like Webb never bought into Warhurst's program and didn't really give him a fair chance...

Your statements are hyperbole as well. You just have a negative opinion on Warhurst.

Because of Webb's poor performances as a professional, Warhurst does not look that bad in hindsight. If Webb bombs again in 2004 he is going to have to do some career reevaluation.

Hmmmm, are you close to coach Raczko? You are certainly taking my opinions way too seriously.

As usual, the USA is the centre of the universe a lot of the time on this board-notwithstanding jhcsteve's?? good idea about more of a world focus. If you are going to have a debate about Ronnie's coaching abilities, you cannot avoid dissecting Sully's accomplishments no matter what you think of them and I notice that you left Andy's comment alone about him-likely because you knew that he actually understated what he has done. At least on letsrun, they get that part of the debate right.
