      Your statements are
      >hyperbole as well. You just have a negative

      No, just a realistic one.

      Because of Webb's poor
      >performances as a professional, Warhurst does not
      >look that bad in hindsight.

Not if you really know much at all about coaching and training. Webb's appendix wasn't about to burst for over a year. Webb did some things wrong, but Webb's case does not make or break Warhurst.

Hmmmm, are you close to coach
      >Raczko? You are certainly taking my opinions way
      >too seriously.

No, apparently nowhere near as close as you are to Warhurst.

      Lets avoid a childish pissing

Only avoided because it was way to obvious, but it's quite easy to grant you your wish. How many WC or Olympic medal's does Sullivan have? Coach Li and Lagat have done MUCH better in HALF the career of Sullivan and Warhurst.

I notice that YOU left my comments alone regarding the other points. Do they do that on letsrun, too? Whatever Sullivan has done doesn't make Andy's hollow praises of Warhurst gain credibility. Even if Sullivan's accomplishments have been understated, that doesn't do anything to negate the fact that most of the rest of the post is laughably overstated.

I'm not talking specifically, I'm talking within the context of a larger debate. You are now talking about one athlete and one coach which isn't what Andy was talking about(and neither were you).

You missed my point. I didn't take a position-even on Sully. I'm just trying to focus the discussion a bit better.

                Re: Update on Webb's coach

Sully was 3rd at NCAAs as a freshman after having run 3:39 in high school. A few years later he had won it, and had been in two World Championships finals. By 2000, he had run 3:31 and finished 5th at the Olympics. Decent progression under a single coach, I would say. In that time he dealy with injuries, including surgery.

Webb finished 4th? at NCAAs as a freshman after having run 3:38 in high school. He accomplished despite a minor injury indoors. Patience is a virtue.

Oh yeah, and Warhurst has developed dozens of other athletes that solidly stand on their own. As far as I know, Razcko's resume has 2 guys with excellent high school times.

Say what you want about either of them, but keep in mind that one athlete does not make or break a coach.

Maybe because that was the only athlete you brought up out of the others that had been mentioned already?

                    Re: Update on Webb's coach

I think we all can agree that Webb is way behind schedule. Whatever he has been doing the last year is not working. I don't know if Webb or his coach is too blame.

Remember if Webb does not make the Olympics next year he will have to wait until his mid-twenties to qualify again. By then people will be saying "Webb who". The reason there are so many Webb posts on this and other forums is because people just can't understand how someone with Webb's talent can go into to such a professional decline. A 3:55 mile would be a disappointment, but he has not even run that fast in the last two years.

I know people are going to say most top US milers don't mature until they are 28 years old. That in itself is another problem.

Yes, he is behind what was expected and he was behind in '02 as well as '03. He had medical problems both years. Training related and nontraining related. Warhurst should definately shoulder some of the blame for '02. Workouts were not controlled and as mentioned in the book he pushes his athletes until he finds their limits - he found Webb's limits when Alan broke. That year he also found the limits of several other athletes in the same fashion.

                      I know people are
                      >going to say most top US milers don't mature

No, unfortunately in the US most milers have been maturing at 23 and not heard from after college. It would be nice to have a US miler mature at 28 when they are at their physiological peak.

I am really hoping Webb can pull it off this year. I am also hoping the rest of the crew starts putting it together as well - Stember, Lunn, Berryhill and yes, even Jennings. It would be nice to see several US guys hammering it out in the mid 3:30s.

Of course, I think Webb is smart in doing what he's doing. And, in the real world Nike made an offer that he really couldn't refuse. Only time will tell if it pays off in his running - it has already paid off in his bank account.

Entirely inconclusive because not all the other variables remained the same or close to the same. He had a major medical problem that was probably having a significant affect on him all season. He could have done El G's training exactly but done no better since his body was busy fighting an internal battle on top of being punished through training.

At least add the label "Webb Basher" to your name if that's all you're here to do.

                          Webb Basher?

I don't spend that much time talking about Webb.

I spend a lot of time defending US milers like Lunn and Berryhill. Actually, Krummenacker is the one that really deserves that Nike contract.
