Medical Examiner Releases Statement on Kimani Death
Wednesday, October 22, 2003
David Kimani
(1978-2003)
TUSCALOOSA, AL --- David Kimani’s official cause of death has been released as undetermined natural disease, according to a statement by Dr. Art Shores, State Medical Examiner with The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences. The final findings were released today after a lengthy and thorough investigation by Dr. Shores, with the assistance of forensic cardiac and neuropathology specialists.
Kimani, among the most accomplished and respected track athletes in The University of Alabama’s history, passed away on April 16, 2003 after collapsing at Mary Burke Dining Hall.
Alabama team physician, Dr. Jeff Laubenthal praised the diligence and exhaustive investigation of Dr. Shores and his staff in determining the cause of Kimani’s death. “Given the unexpected manner of David’s death, it was extremely important to us that all avenues were explored during the investigation. David’s reputation as a champion and a respected member of the Alabama community was upheld by the findings of the autopsy. The clinical evidence supports that in all probability David suffered a fatal cardiac arrhythmia while eating lunch. No evidence of illicit or illegal drug use was found in the comprehensive investigation.”
“Much credit goes to Dr. Shores and the specialists in their careful and meticulous search,” Laubenthal added. “They did honor to his memory in their tireless efforts to find a cause of his death. David’s family and The University of Alabama are thankful for their efforts.”
“The University community would like to thank Dr. Shores for his work in determining the cause of David’s death,” said Alabama Track and Field Coach Harvey Glance.
