Lack of "sexual characteristics" of a woman
India:s Santhi to be stripped of Asiad Silver

    http://www.indiadaily.com/editorial/14784.asp

Santhi Soundarajan who made India proud by winning the silver medal in the women's 800m event at the Asian Games in Doha, is likely to be stripped of her medal after it was found that she did not have the necessary ‘sexual characteristics’ of a woman.

Ran 2.08,62 in heat, and 2.03,16 in the final.

And my favorite is back in the news again. Tammy Thomas resurfaces in the Balco case. As I hear it, if they get "her", they'll go after Barry Bonds on the same gounds. Stay tuned!

I do not recall that Stella "Walsh" has been stripped of her/his Olympic and Sullivan Award since "her/his" death in Cleveland parking lot revealed his/her ambigious "sexual characteristics"

Didn't Stella Walsh get married and have a child? I started a thread about her somewhere else.

She did marry but never had children. Her autopsy revealed non-functioning male genitalia and both male and female chromosones. I found no mention in several sources of Walsh having female genitalia.
Ironically, Walsh supporters demanded a gender test of Helen Stephens after she defeated Walsh in the 1936 Olympics 100m. Nobody thought to test Walsh who continued to compete as a female until 1954.

At which time (1958) she was 47 years old. Several Google sources report that she won her last national ch in 1951 in LJ at age 40.

I don't believe Stella Walsh ever won the Sullivan Award.

Just what, exactly, does that mean? "Lack of sexual characteristics of a woman" is a category that begs a hundred questions. And didn't the IOC approve of transexual athletes participating in the games just before the last Olympics? I don't get any of it... some one give me some sex education lessons!

Interesting article, tafnut. Acccoring to Wikipedia, Pamela Anderson has, on more than one occasion, had breast implants.

                      I'm shocked, shocked . . . .!!!!!

When you say male and female chromosomes, do you mean XXY? (As opposed to XX for women and XY for men)

I googled a dozen sources and that is the way they expressed the dual gender chromosone.. some references referred to XX, XY and even XXY and XYY but none were specific to Walshs exact mix of Xs and Ys.. most simply stated that "she" was a male.

I'd guess she was XY but the cells in her body can barely perceive testosterone. At the time she was an embryo there was enough signal (over some threshold) to cause 'some' male genitalia to form but probably not enough to be described as male. An extreme example of this is Jamie Lee Curtis, who I believe is anatomically a woman, but has one X and one Y chromosome.

Where is Pego, he probably knows the XXY phenotype? One reason to suspect that this is not an extra chromosome is that this is an athlete. I suspect extra chromosomes can have other detrimental effects that would be incompatible with athletic prowess.

For the lack of sensitivity to testosterone see:

I took that off of the guessing game on here a few days ago. I though it was accepted as the correct answer. .. don't remember what year.
