  • Next Great Ethiopian?

    How do you top Haile?
By unveiling the next great Ethiopian distance runner at the P.F. Chang's Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon & 1/2 Marathon, where Haile Gebrselassie last year set the world half-marathon record.

Mike Long of Elite Racing believes he's found that man in Tariku Aboset, who will make his international marathon debut on Sunday.

Because of Aboset's ability to keep up in training with Gebrselassie, Long believes that the 24-year-old can become the first man to break 2 hours, 10 minutes in the four-year history of the world's largest marathon/half marathon event.

    Re: Next Great Ethiopian?

I'm sure that the next great Ethiopian is Ibrahim Jeylan.

He won the Ethiopian 10000m title and the Hengelo 10k before his 17th birthday and a few months later, won the World Junior title and just one week later, ran 27:04 for 4th in Brussels.

Ibrahim Jeylan Gashu is a great talent. But to have us believe he's really 17 is a stretch. While not wanting to get into the rather frequent use of over-age runners by E. African nations in Junior competitions, this guy is another of those darn 'kids' who looks .... well, he looks older than KB and is probably at least the same age. Google him and take a look - you can also see him at the IAAF site: http://www.iaaf.org/WJC06/news/Kind=2/newsId=35784.html Great talent but take the age claims with a grain of salt. Or maybe a whole shaker.
