New Idaho state record, based on where they went to HS. Takes down an oldie, but goodie:

    Idaho: Tom von Ruden - 3:56.9 – 1967

Reminds me of tafnut's immortal put-down: "The skinniest guy at Fat Camp"

Don't forget the differences in facilities between '67 & '07, particularly UW. No disrespect toward Symmonds in any way, but every year many pop big times at UW that are never again approached indoor or out. Hopefully, Symmonds will be an exception and make this a springboard to bigger and better things.

Think we got a pretty good idea of his talent when he popped that out-of-nowhere 1:45.83 for 2nd at USATF last June.

Nice to see a U.S. guy coming to the 1500 from a solid 800. We haven't seen much of this in a while.

True. I thought of DK. There are a few others, but there seem to be fewer and fewer coming from sub 1:46 beginnings. I know, there are fewer 1:46 Americans period, but it still refreshing to see a guy moving up to the 1500 successfully and showing potential based upon his 800.

You may not know that he won seven NCAA III titles - three at 1.500m -- 2004 being the only year he didn:t double-up at NCAA III.

Symmonds runner-up finish in the 800m at the USA championships was his first loss in an 800m final in six years. He ran a 4.03,83y at Oregon Twilight his first year at Willamette and a 24.49 8km in his first-ever xc race the autumn leading up to that mile (was 14:th at the DIII West Regional, and was #5 man on his team at the NCAA DIII champs where his team placed 5:th his first year; was 16:th at DIII West Regional his 3:rd year and 5:th man on his team which placed again 5:th at NCAA DIII champs; was 17:th at DIII West Regional his 4:th year and top runner (61:st) on his 16:th-place team at NCAA champs), so he had the endurance.

He ran a 48,15 (new school record) at the Charles Bowles Spring Break Classic last march, and dropped his 800m to a NCAA III record 1.47,34 at the TN Distance Classic in may, running nearly 1,5 seconds faster than his previous best.

Hard to believe he'd switch his coaching arrangements after such tremendous development at Willamette.

What good fortune not be overraced and overtrained at D1.

Hopefully soon he wont need the stipend, and can choose who he'll works with.
If they train him like a 1500/5000 in Eugene he'll end up much like Lamora, dropping his 1500 and mile but never hitting 144's. Still it looks like he's heading for low 330's. What a spectacular talent.

3:56.72 is quite a ways from low 3:30's for 1500m....but it's a very fine early season mile and I'd love to see low 3:30's at some time in the next few years.

I did not know...but certainly do now with your help. Thanks for the background. I like the idea of a quality 800/1500 guy coming at the event in opposition to the 1500/3-5K approach, and will follow him to see how he develops.
