So the big question is: has she successfully transitioned to her 'new run' this year? Her coach had told her that in order to fully realize her potential she had to completely retool (can't remember the specifics, if, indeed, they were ever made public) her approach. She did not look dynamic on the runway last year, so will she be reinvented this year, or failing that, her old self again (which seemed to be doing just fine)? And . . . can SD shake the Achilles problem and get back in the mix? New starlets anxiously wait in the wings to see if their time has come.

Of course, that also provides her with a good incentive NOT to attempt that height before the Poland meet. I doubt if she'd be ready for that kind of vaulting this early in the season anyway, but if the opportunity ever arose (Millrose?), I suspect that unless somebody comes up with a similar incentive, she'll be content to settle for a WIR and go for the big one when the big bucks are there.

“I am planning a shorter indoor season,” confirmed Isinbayeva. “I will compete in just five meetings indoors starting from the Millrose Games in New York on 2 February for the 100th anniversary of this meeting. It will be my first competition ever in the USA.”

“Then I will be competing in Donetzk (10 February), Bydzgogsz (14 February), Birmingham (17 February), Paris Bercy (23 February) but I will skip the European Indoor Championships in Birmingham because I need more weeks training to prepare for the outdoor season.”
