  • The Next Great American Distance Runner

The first runner, Auburn Staples, took only about 8 minutes to run the first two miles. He dunked his doughnuts in water and stuffed them in his mouth, his cheeks pudgy with sugary dough.

Staples, an N.C. State senior, finished his dozen in about seven minutes and sprinted back down Peace Street. Standing 6 feet and weighing 141 pounds, Staples finished first, in 24 minutes, 31 seconds, beating his time last year by more than six minutes.

Wow. Two 4 minute miles, down a dozen donuts and follow it up with 2 sub 5-minute miles. Not too shabby.

I wonder if either the writer or her newspaper realize how much they damage their reputation and credibility when they print nonsense like that. I doubt it.

        No problem, y'all

Y'all got to realize that things are a bit more relaxed here in the South (even in the People's Republic of Chapel Hill), and a "mile" is not nearly as rigorous - or as long - as it is in more anal-obsessive societies. Why, one might define a "mile" here as "the approximate distance a college student hungry for donuts can run in about four minutes"!

I was suprised it took 7 minutes to eat the dozen - by volume, wouldn't a dozen krispy kremes mash down to about the size of a grapefruit?

Actually, I think, the size of a golf ball.

Probably no worse than acreages (expecially when it's for sale) in New England. "Yup, 40 acres, . . . more or lessss."

Are we to understand that these are the regionally approved spellings (or was that Tori)?
[edited one time: You can tell that my two years in south Texas are 20 years in the past.]
