  • If You Were Driving Through All 48 States....

(sorry to exclude the non-contiguous ones; this is a feasible road-trip thought)

DJ's comment on the Drake thread about driving through the Field Of Dreams site leads me to ask this question: as a track freak you want to stop at one place in each state that has the most significance (nationally speaking) for our sport, what would it be in each state?

Help me fill in this chart (cut and paste each time you add something). I'll start by cherry-picking two of the easiest ones:

    Alabama
    Arizona
    Arkansas
California--LA Coliseum, host to two Olympics.
    Colorado
    Connecticut
    Delaware
    Florida
    Georgia
    Idaho
    Illinois
    Indiana
    Iowa
    Kansas
    Kentucky
    Louisiana
    Maine
    Maryland
    Massachusetts
    Michigan
    Minnesota
    Mississippi
    Missouri
    Montana
    Nebraska
    Nevada
    New Hampshire
    New Jersey
    New Mexico
    New York
    North Carolina
    North Dakota
    Ohio
    Oklahoma
    Oregon--Hayward Field
    Pennsylvania
    Rhode Island
    South Carolina
    South Dakota
    Tennessee
    Texas
    Utah
    Vermont
    Virginia
    Washington
    West Virginia
    Wisconsin
    Wyoming

Colorado--uhh...the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, where they no longer even have a track??? (Joking, I'll try to do better).

C'mon guys, read the instructions! You're supposed to cut and paste the roster of states each time, filling in the State(s) you're adding. Only way anybody will keep track of anything.

The sites of the Drake and Penn Relays are easy choices for Iowa and Pennsylvania.

And if the Coliseum is ok, even though there's no longer a track there, I suppose the Atlanta Olympic stadium (or what's left of it) is also a legitimate pick

The indoor track at the University of Arkansas is, at least for the time being, a sure choice for that state.

Wallace Wade stadium at Duke should win North Carolina, although there have been some good meets at NC State in Raleigh.

            BYU wins Utah

            Just added Indy

OK, I'll play cut and paste:

            Alabama
            Arizona
Arkansas - Tyson indoor track, Fayetteville
California--LA Coliseum, host to two Olympics.
            Colorado
            Connecticut
            Delaware
            Florida
Georgia--Ted Turner Field f/k/a/ Olympic Stadium
            Idaho
            Illinois
            Indiana--IUPUI, Indianapolis
            Iowa--Drake University, Des Moines
            Kansas
            Kentucky
            Louisiana
            Maine
            Maryland
            Massachusetts
            Michigan
            Minnesota
            Mississippi
            Missouri
            Montana
            Nebraska
            Nevada
            New Hampshire
            New Jersey
            New Mexico
            New York
            North Carolina--Wallace Wade Stadium, Durham
            North Dakota
            Ohio
            Oklahoma
            Oregon--Hayward Field
            Pennsylvania--Franklin Field, Philadelphia
            Rhode Island
            South Carolina
            South Dakota
            Tennessee
            Texas
            Utah - BYU, Provo

You're not limited to stadia, of course.

Like, for Oklahoma is perhaps the best place Prague, the site of the birth of Jim Thorpe?!

And feel free to trash other people's choices of course.

BTW - Connecticut? Yale track, as long as you're talking 1920s or 30s. I can't remember seeing one cool meet there from ages 6-18!

oh and if we're not just talking tracks, for Florida I would like to nominate that dusty road in Baker County where Houston McTear ran his 9.4 in sneakers as an 8th grader!

Exactly----Massachusetts would have to be the chunk of road between Hopkinton & Boston, neh? (I'm not filling these parameter-setting suggestions in: my intent was only to jump-start the thread)
