  • OK, for Kentucky, how about this one: Kentucky Boys Home, where in 1979, Stuart D., formerly a 10:30 high school two-miler, running in a meaningless early September cross-country invitational, for a meaningless University of Louisville cross-country team, developed diarrhea mid-race and made the courageous decision to press on through the entire 10,000 meters and simply do his business in full stride, rather than retire to the adjacent woods and relieve himself with dignity amidst the poison ivy.

I remember Jerry Tighe (distance runner) from Whitworth.

        It was 1984.

        • For Oklahoma, I would definitely want to make a stop at Prague.

          • For Georgia, also the track at Jefferson, site of the boys state meet. The practice track next to the former Olympic Stadium is still there, too.

For Tennessee, high honorable mention to the TSU track, home of the Tigerbelles.

(Still waiting for an email from Coach Ed Temple.)

Since I drove by Whitworth on Sunday, I was reminded of this open question.

The Spokane-school guy who finished 3rd was discus thrower Jerry Shaffer in '63. Actually, Whitworth had a second scorer I missed first time around because he's in a discontinued event: Ray Klicker 5th in the 220H in '58.

That track--which was actually at Echo Summit--was cut up and relaid at South Lake Tahoe High School and used for many years.
And it is finally being replaced. See story on front page.
