I am new to this web site and hope this hasn't been asked before. Does anyone have any information regarding Michael Johnson's 100m splits for his world record 400m? Also, any ideas on the best way to set up a 400?

Both 50m & 100m splits of this race are displayed in the link below:
http://www.csd.mec.es/CSD/Deporte/Biome ... 400men.htm
Courtesy of the Biomechanical Analysis in Throwing and Running events at the 1999 Sevilla World Athletics Championships.
MJ's 100m Splits were (from the Biomechanical Analysis Splits Research Team within the Sevilla WCH'99);
RT: 01.50s (0.15s)
100m: 11.10s (11.05s)
200m: 21.22s (10.12s)
300m: 31.66s (10.44s)
400m: 43.18s (11.52s)
200m Splits:
21.22s/21.96s
I would say the best ways to 'set up a 400m race' is to go out hard for the first 200m of the race, coast the next 100m, and give it 'all you have' in the final 100m.
But avoid trying to go out too fast in the first 200m, or you body will pay in the homestraight.

Re: Michael Johnson's WR 400m splits
I think what those splits tell you is to PUSH the 3rd 100, which very few do. Run as fast as you can fully relaxed the first 200, push the next 100 and then see what you're made of at the end. YOu should actually 'downshift' in the final 60 by focussing more on a quicker turnover than long powerful strides. Nobody's stride length is very good then, so go for the tutnover instead.
