Razorbacks Win 30th-Consecutive League Title and 13th-Straight SEC Championship
ATHENS, Ga. Arkansas continued to add to one of the longest tenured championship streaks in collegiate athletics? history Monday morning as the Razorback cross country team took the trophy at the 2003 Southeastern Conference Championships.
The Hogs earned their 13th-straight SEC crown since entering the league in 1991 and their 30th-consecutive conference crown. Arkansas captured the final 17 cross country titles in the Southwest Conference before switching leagues.
Led by its two All-Americans, senior Alistair Cragg and junior Jason Sandfort, UA tallied 33 points, with six runners in the top 12 to finish first in the 8,000-meter race on the University of Georgia golf course. Georgia came in a second with 58 points and with three competitors in the top 12. Thomas Morgan of Kentucky took the individual title with a course-record time of 24:59. Overall Arkansas accounted for the SEC?s top three finishing freshmen.
?Winning conference is big for us, because we had such a young group this year,? Arkansas head coach John McDonnell said. ?They had to run great to get the win and they did it on a very tough course. Alistair laid it on the line. So many guys ran great. All the way through the top seven was outstanding.?
After missing the majority of the cross country season Cragg staged a remarkable return to cross the line in third with a time of 25:08. Cragg underwent surgery on September 26, to correct a sport hernia he had suffered from since May. At last year?s championships Cragg garnered runner-up honors with a time of 24:20.
?I had expectations of winning, but realistically I didn?t know how my legs were going to hold up,? Cragg said. ?It helped a lot when Jason (Sandfort) was up with me. He kept a good pace. I couldn?t have hung in there if Jason had not stayed up with me.?
Cragg and Sandfort took turns leading the Hog harriers throughout the entire race. At the finish line Sandfort was right behind in fourth (25:09). His finish was an improvement from the sixth place showing in 2002. Their combined performances helped lead the Razorbacks to victory.
With UA?s first place finish Coach McDonnell and his Razorbacks extended one of the most impressive streaks in collegiate athletics. This year?s crown brings their total of conference championships to an astounding 72 titles in cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field since McDonnell arrived in Fayetteville in 1974.
?I?d be lying if I didn?t think about it,? McDonnell said. ?Thirty is a special number. The kids knew about it and ran with a purpose.?
Freshman Mike Poe had a great race and was the SEC?s highest finishing freshman. The Rancho Cucamonda, Calif., native posted a seventh-place finish with a time of 25:31.
?It was great to have Alistair (Cragg) back,? Poe said. ?He helped us a lot. (Chris) Mulvaney stepped up too. This one was definitely for Coach Mac. We wanted to keep the tradition in the family.?
For the first time this year senior Chris Mulvaney was apart of Arkansas? top five as he came in ninth overall and ran a time of 25:35.20. At last year?s race Mulvaney was unable to finish due to an injury.
Mulvaney was followed closely by two newcomers, freshman Josh Harper and sophomore Matt Gunn. Harper registered a time of 25:35.56 for a 10th-place showing. In his first conference championship Gunn finished 11th with a time of 25:35.83.
Freshman Sam Vazquez took sophomore Luis Bordes? spot after a nagging knee injury kept him from competing. In only his second race of the season Vazquez turned in a time of 25:50 to grab the 15th spot. Sophomore Michael Taylor rounded out the Razorbacks when he came in 29th (26:32).
After the Arkansas squad returns from the SEC Championships they will have a week off to prepare for the NCAA South Central Regional Championships in Waco, Texas on November 15. The NCAA Cross Country Championships will follow shortly on November 24, in Waterloo, Iowa.
