Marathon points system

I just saw this in an AP story. It's the first I've heard about this:

Marathon runners are about to get a global points system to determine the best racers. Men and women runners will be pooled together with points based on results of their best three marathons over a two-year period. One of the three must be the NYC Marathon. Prize money will be given to the top 10 runners, with the winner receiving $1 million. The rankings start with the Tokyo International Women's Marathon on Nov. 16.

I love it. Thanks ING. But it sucks if you are a major marathon race director and you race didn't make it on that list.

Now we need to get some corporate sponsorship teams set-up like they had in Japan in the 70's-80's.

Team Nike training in Oregon, Team Bank America in Boulder, Team Microsoft in Charlotte, Team GE training in Boston, etc. Might give some of our collegiate runners something to shoot for after college.

The article says that the list is tentative. Here is the list. What obvious ones are missing?

Maybe I'm just a poor reader, but I don't see where you have to run in New York to qualify for this thing. It merely says that NYC is the last race in the series, no?

They are still there. Scheibler was with NEC. There was talk of disbanding it but I think it is still going.

If I were one of the other big marathons, or more precisely their title sponsor, I'd be going nuts over this plan. In a negative sense. You're Flora (the big London sponsor) and every time a press release goes out on your race, or when the results are announced, ING's name gets mentioned as well without contributing to the race? Ambush marketing of the worst kind.

I understand that but is it illegal? If so, I guess they will have to work something out. If not-good for the sport.
