  • You Want Big Discus? Wait Until Next Week

Gerd Kanter will be at a new meet in DT-friendly Salinas. Apparently his coach says he'll break the WR this year (although not nec. at this meet).

Brief story, entries on the front page.

Is that the site of the infamous 'Antelope Valley' (one of favorite 70s T&FN covers)?

Kanter's coach points out that Kanter's website has a stat section which shows the cities with most throws (I'm assuming one per thrower per competition) over 67m (219-10). Salinas just needs four to move into the lead. Before you peek, anybody care to guess which city is first?

(from that URL you can navigate to other good DT stuff on the site too)

My guess is tied with Salinas in second. Four out of the top 10 are in CA. I never thought of this as such an unusually windy place. Maybe it is because throwers like to hang out here??

Modesto and San José Jenner are both fields outside the stadium, so no stands in the way.

Since both of those are JCs and Salinas is too, perhaps it's the same. At most, a school that size, there's no kind of bowl to get in the way.

San José State (Wilkins WRs) had small row of stands on one side, but open fields on other side, including the direction whence cameth the wind.

Walnut yet another JC (hmmm....), decent stands on side, but not a bowl, and no particular wind in the way.

Combine that w/ fact that California has "forever" been the center of U.S. discus throwing, with most top throwers migrating that way, and they know what the wind is about and seek out good spots (see Lancaster), the Cali domination is no surprise.

As San Jose (the city) built up (downtown), the winds weren't as good as earlier. Of course, the the demise of the Jenner meet, not so much action of highest level. Salinas seems more open than Modesto (more trees in the vicinity of the throwing area at Modesto). Also, the relays there have been in a decline for awhile. Salinas is about an hour from San Jose, so an easier trip than Modesto, for throwers in the area. Also, Salinas is a throws only meet, so no distractions from the left foot/right foot crowd. I assume that there is a track on campus, but I don't think I have seen it. Or, maybe I just saw and ignored.

PS, I havn't heard anything, so I assume that the Maui landing area is/was OK and Suzy's AR will stand this time.

Good. Hope small children are being blown accross the field.

Did you go to the hockey match last nite? Pretty grim couple of days for bay area pro teams, with the Warriors and Sharks both dumping games at the end. I watched GS on TV, but only read about SJ in today's paper.
