Of course, Center City includes an historic district including Independence Hall where the Declaration of Independence was enacted and where the Liberty Bell still resides.

The Art Museum (where Rocky ran up the steps) is next to the Skuykill River and Boathouse Row which is a nice place to jog or walk.

Franklin Field itself is on the other side of the Skuykill River at the edge of "West Philadelphia" and the University of Pennsylvania campus. The University Museum (known for its collection of mummies) is across the street from Franklin Field. If you haven't guessed, Ben Franklin founded the University.

Philly is one of the easiest cities for a visitor to take the wrong exit ramp, and end up exactly where you shouldn't be with no idea how to get back to where you should. Philly in 2007 is a terrible place.

in the suburbs it's 20k.....those that can afford it get their kids good educations....the rest are forgetten...

That's pretty much the story here in SF/Oakland too.

I was out driving around - didn't even feel one.

Edit: Actually, that happened while I was sitting at my desk - still didn't feel a thing.

In 2006, a high schooler in town for the relays was a passenger in a car that bumped another car (resulting in no visible damage), they were followed and he was shot in the neck, resulting in tetraplegia. He was cared for by a former colleague of mine at Jefferson University Hospital and ultimately died a few months ago.

There have been a least 140 murders in Philadelphia this year and many more that have survived GSWs. My inpatient service currently has several patients with gun shot wounds, one was shot eleven times.

Daily, I see patients that happened to "feel perfectly safe," many from the areas you mentioned. In the last week, there have been moments when I did not feel comfortable alone in the hospital with patients, and certainly not walking from the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania through campus to Presbyterian Hospital.

Last August, I found a dead body while running and a friend of mine has found two in the last three years. A former medical student that rotated with me was raped and killed while running a two mile loop from her apartment on a Sunday afternoon. People waiting for the bus 60 meters away heard her scream and did not report it for four days.

Philadelphia, including University and Center City, is not a safe place.

                        The facts say otherwise.
