But then on the drive home, I kept thinking about it and realized how utterly appropriate and timely the cover was this month. Not just for track and field, but for the world, as global warming--and the resultant screwed up weather patterns--is a front burner issue right now.
Oh dear! Has our steadfast editor really, actually quoted favorable from such utter and abject drivel -- such inane piffle? Yes, apparently he has, and predicatably enough it originates from the People's Republic of Minnesota (although I would have expected Vermont).

The editor -- who clearly is terribly touchy about the current cover photo (but why should he be? he's the boss) -- evidently thinks global warming -- an argument-terminator within certain cheese-eating circles -- is a perfectly good rationale for a crummy cover pic. But why, pray tell, does an image of chilly Deena (not that there's any way we can tell she's chilly) advance the Sacred Cause of Global Warming? Beats me!

Gary, there ain't a single man-jack on this site who's going to cancel his magazine subscription because of this cover -- or any cover. If at some future point you decided to "fall on your sword," one hopes it will be over a more significant matter than the Deena-cover.

AJ must be thinking “Sheeeeeit!!#@%!! Here I am an OG champ, four-time WC champ, top of the game for a decade stand up dude, and they put me on the cover only after a bunch of Internet chat room idiots beg them to. Then this no-WC-medals-1-OG-bronze (ie Loser) chick gets her second cover in a year for coming in fifth (freakin’ fifth????!!!) in that Boston race???”

the Sacred Cause of Global Warming[/quote]

Hey, cool. Sounds like we found one of the LAST dinosaurs who actually don't subscribe to the issue as being important. Atta boy--knew you were out there somewhere!

"People's Republic of Minnesota"--?? Wow. We've been called many things--thanks to former gov Jesse--but PRM? Sure you're not confusing us with Boulder...?

I do understand your confusion, though. It takes a certain amount of education in order to appreciate the Big Picture. [Did I mention MN is one of the nation's leaders in education, along with our Republican governor (and two Independents before him)...?]

Got to go; time to do my daily protest of the Iraq war. :]

She simply did not perform, there was no special section on her in the issue (kept looking for it as she was the cover-girl).

I am already looking forward to June's issue and perhaps Ryan Hall's first cover! Then in July, perhaps Galen Rupp!!! American distance running is stronger than ever...
Well said. Recognition of past accomplishments is important, but the failure to embrace the accomplishments of current runners today lacks basic dignity and it can not be defended.

is "failure" sometimes not worth a cover for a well known/respected athlete -( it's still news ) ?

                e g : '92 :

                1) a cover of dan no-heighting in trials
                2) a cover of gail falling over the last hurdle in barcelona

woud they have not been worthy covers ?
