  • The GL Fantasy Track League

I'm guessing this will be of no interest to anyone but the seven of us involved, but for what it's worth, the new Golden League-based fantasy t&f league I started is up and running. As of this writing, we're in the middle of conducting our first draft. Follow along on the fun (and feel free to leave comments ridiculing our bad draft choices, or praise us on our genius) at http://fantasytrack.blogspot.com

Once the Euro season gets going, the basic gist is this: we score 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 in the GL meets, and then double points at the Worlds/Olympics. We still haven't decided what we'll do on the non-championship years, but thankfully we have until 2010 to decide.

Wow! You've introduced quite a wrinkle in choosing to score GL meets, since they don't have have all events, and the roster of events they do have changes somewhat from year to year. Sprinters and distance runners thus gain immeasurably more value than virtually all field eventers.

Bet Dale wants his round 5 pick back about now :-)

Yeah, after about the third round it occurred to me that I'd better check the schedules of the meets and see which events were being held this year. And when next year's draft rolls around, it will be interesting to see how people are scrambling to change their rosters.

This could get messy – we'll see how the format works and see if it needs any tweaking next year. Maybe we'll add GP meets or something next year.

It's too bad the major meets can't give better exposure to field events.

Back in the days when there were only 2 title meets in every quadrennium, we used to simply score the World Rankings.

Hmmm... I trust that was before you became one of the people who decides the world rankings?

In view of the prize structure of the World Athletics Final, it seems silly not to score that meet. More of the top ranked athletes show up there than at any other single GL meet just because all of the events are contested. It would also tend to offset the disadvantage that gh mentioned if your have ahletes on your roster who are in non-GL events.

Yeah, I thought about WAF, but it can be such a lame meet. How many fans were in the stands last year in Monaco, 10? But we still might tweak the format.

Is your game scoring the fans or the athletes? Take a look at who has competed in the WAF every year since they started the WAF format. They've all had excellent fields--almost all of the top athletes in every event show up and, because of the prize structure, the competition is quite intense.

Since the meet was in Stuttgart, my guess is ZERO :=)

Oh, right. Well, in Monaco 2005 it was ALMOST zero.
