"So a 22 to 24 yr. old racing HS kids isn't a problem? Or would it only be a problem if he weren't an African? Here's his mugshot, next to those of the kids he raced:"

I meant he LOOKS about that age, but I have no idea whether he's just another older looking teenager. There's no problem with someone who LOOKS older racing with high school kids. The question can just as easily be asked: Would it only be a problem if he were African?

Actually I'd like to clear something up for a few silly people on this board who keep bringing up the race card where I am concerned and keep accusing me of being mindlessly politically correct: (and you may or may not be one) Most of the regular readers here would probably laugh at such a notion, if you've read me on more than one or two threads you'd know I'm slightly left of Attila the Hun sometimes, and next to impossible to place at others. And a lot of the time I monitor what I say in order to NOT offend PC sensibilities. It's a bit tired hearing from the few people who keep harping on how I defend Mutola and other black athletes. I'll express my opinions and if you try to box me into your little pc categories, have fun.

All sarcasm aside, look at Kiptoo compared to ALL the finalists. He looks like he's snickering about getting away with being a lot older. Sheesh. Poor Matusak is buried under adolescent acne.

Looks like someone else needs to get their house in order. Bringing up drug cheats in the middle of an argument about someone lying about their ages? Looks like you had no ammo to fire back at the guy. Since the kid is from E. Africa, and even the always politically correct Larry Rawson has mentioned the Kenyan penchant for stretching the truth about age, the people that think Kiptoo is over age may be correct. He certainly looks old. Older than any top HS distance runner I've seen in quite awhile. Maybe the guys are right, and some people would only complain if the kid were European or something. But since he's African, everyone has to play along.

If you want to get into the drug thing, go to other thread, and talk about Chepchumba, or Lagat's strange situation. He's the only one with a false positive? Or was there a clean sample at all? Who knows? I know it has as much to with this thread as your bringing up Regina, Toth, etc. Get over it, Kiptoo looks like a guy in his early 20's. He might be a guy in a his early 20's. If he is, then he's a cheat.

pictures I saw of him from Dyestat didn't make me think he looked like he was in his mid-twenties. this year I've seen a number of pictures of good high schoolers with beards. since many men can't grow a full beard until their mid-twenties why are these guys ages not being questioned?

Knee Jerk, Danny Almonte was discovered to be older than his years based on birth certificates. As a parent of children who compete in youth sports, a birth certificate, or validated proof of age, is required for competition. In many places, proof of age must be shown to compete in high school sports, as it maintains a fair playing field.

It would be a wise idea for someone to look for some proof of age for young Mr. Kiptoo.

A few other random thoughts from this post:

    1. It is not racist to think this guy looks older than his years.

    2. LeBron James is an excellent example of how nature does not allow everyone to age at the same rate.

    3. Let's skip the inflammatory rhetoric and stay with the basics - this guy looks to be in his mid-twenties and comes from a part of the world where there appears to be a habit of stretching the truth about ages.

    4. Regardless of age, he has chosen a great location and a great coach to approach his potential.

Sorry. You aren't going to convince anyone that this kid's older unless you have some evidence. Just saying he LOOKS older just isn't enough. You have to do better than that.

And no, I am not a Webb basher, but he did APPEAR to be a little OLDER-LOOKING than most other h.s. seniors. But who cares? This doesn't mean I think he was TOO OLD or CHEATING. I enjoyed watching the Pre race live and was very happy for the kid. I have seen Webb dozens of times at meets and he does in fact (to me) look a bit older than he really is. Like, Kiptoo, he might just look more mature.

All I am saying is give the kid the benefit of the doubt. Let's not infect great performances with b.s. unless you have proof to back it up. Getting on the net and implying that this kid is a cheater because he LOOKS OLD is pretty sad.

Perhaps the only think Kiptoo is guilty of is not LOOKING LIKE America's IDEAL distance poster boy...

Feel bad? Don't feel bad at all. Just tired of all the different ways people cheat. All the knee jerk lib types jump to the defense of this guy who's OBVIOUSLY older than what is claimed. If you had been at the meet, you'd have to agree, unless you're blinded by PC. The knee jerk folks are funny mentioning Webb. No way did Webb look as old as this guy. Met Webb at the '01 Arcadia, took pics, etc. Webb looked like a teen. This guy looks about 22, which I suspect he really is. Sure, everyone can claim he's just mature, but he looks like your average college sr. Just ask some of the other runners and spectators who were there. He doesn't look "mature" like some kids in HS, he looks OLD. And he isn't sporting a goatee either. If he were an overage Moroccan or Italian, the people automatically defending Kiptoo would scream bloody murder about a "cheat".

I really don't think Dameworth looked like he was in his mid-20's, but he WAS old for a HSer. He was 19.5 when he graduated.

Bryan Dameworth looked like a mid-20s high schooler - even as a soph when he won the CA state xc champs. We had a guy in the race who placed 2nd, a dude from San Diego, Goshu Tadese, who also looked like he was somewhere between 24-26. They were allowed to compete - despite their "men"acing appearances and demeanors... not to mention their eligibility verifications.
