USA Indoor Championships to return to Boston in 2004

INDIANAPOLIS – The world’s oldest indoor track championship, the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships, will be held in Boston for the second consecutive year, USATF announced Thursday. The 2004 USA Indoor Championships will be held February 27-29 at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center at Roxbury Community College.

More than 600 athletes are expected to compete in Boston to determine who will represent Team USA at the 2004 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Athletics. The top two finishers in each event at the USA Indoor Championships will be selected for the World Indoor Championships team that will compete March 5-7 in Budapest, Hungary.

“All of us at USA Track & Field are happy to return to Boston and the Reggie Lewis Center, which served as an outstanding host last year for athletes and fans alike,” said USATF CEO Craig Masback. “With the excitement of the Olympic year ahead, we’re confident that this year’s USA Indoor Championships will build on the success of 2003.”

First held in New York in 1888, the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships now are the concluding event of USA Track & Field’s 2004 Indoor Golden Spike Tour. The 2004 Tour will include the adidas Boston Indoor Games on January 31, the Verizon Millrose Games in New York City on February 6, and the Tyson Foods Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., on February 14.

Entering into its sixth year, the Golden Spike Tour provides America’s best athletes the opportunity to compete in the United States and earn substantial prize money in front of a nationally televised audience. Live crowds at Golden Spike Tour meets typically have averaged more than 10,000 fans, with TV ratings rising as much as 25 percent in any given year for individual broadcasts.
