  • MIS-leading PAC-10 performers

On the front page, we have this link to the PAC-10 website and the leading times for 2007 (indoor, outdoor, whatever++) heading into the championship meet this weekend hosted by the Leland college injuns.

But these marks are a joke. Half the guys in the top 10 for the 100m and 200m got those "leading" times in Eugene a few weeks ago when there was a ++4.7 wind pushing them or at MS SAC when it was over 3.0 for some heats. Last season it was the same thing, 3 or 4 conference schools ran in a meet at 2500 feet with a 6.7 wind! There is no " * ", no "A", and no " w " at all next to these "leading" marks.

Additionally, it seems to have slipped their minds up in the PAC-10 office that a few of these "leading" performers dropped out of school before the Spring term began, others are redshirting outdoors, others are injured and still others will not be able to compete in some events in which they are listed due to schedule conflicts.

I've taken a few moments to look a bit deeper at just one event, the men's 100m, and check elevation and wind readings for all the guys in the top 18, as well as the schedule and injury situations, and it is a VERY different group of "leaders".

    The PAC-10 list:

    1Rashad, Ahmad FR USC --- 10.33
    2Alexander, PhilipJR ORE --- 10.40
    3Love, Kelvin JR ASU --- 10.48
    3Peterson, Domenik SR ASU --10.48
    5Robertson, Jaycee SR WSU --- 10.50
    5Woods, Justin SO WSU --- 10.50
    7Eaton, Ashton FR ORE ---- 10.51
    8Alugbue, Roy JR USC --- 10.54
    8Glass, Rodney FR ASU --- 10.54
    8Harris, Troy SR ARIZ --- 10.54
    11Mack, Thomas SR CAL --- 10.57
    11Osaisai, Wopamo JR STAN --- 10.57
    13Bacon, Randy SO WASH --- 10.59
    14Tyus, Marcus JR ARIZ --- 10.68
    15Smith, Brandon FR UCLA --- 10.69
    16Hanson, Jake SO CAL --- 10.70
    17Conrad, Steven JR CAL --- 10.73
    18Griffin, Stan FR UCLA --- 10.74

    MY "Basic" M100 LIST

    1.. Rashad USC --- 10.29
    2.. R. Glass ASU --- 10.57
    3.. T. Harris UA --- 10.58
    4.. K. Love ASU ---10.59
    5.. Robertson WSU ---10.61
    6.. S. Griffin UCLA ---10.63
    7.. Alexander UO ---10.65
    8.. J. Woods WSU ---10.65
    9.. B. Smith UCLA ---10.68
    10. Alugbue USC -----------10.69
    11. M. Tyus UA -----------10.69
    12. A. Eaton UO -----------10.77
    13. Bacon UW -----------10.82

Would it be too much to ask that someone in the PAC-10 office take a few moments and do likewise with ALL the events??? AND maybe they could even put up an entry list, like many of the other conferences have already done. Good gracious sakes alive.

The moral of this (age-old) story is that people who know so little about our sport, and/or the specifics of what they are talking about, need to admit their ignorance and vet their info with someone like yourself (or several other regulars of this (or trackshark) site). Very sad indeed. If this sort of misinformation was given out about FOOTBALL, heads would roll.

There will never be an "A" next to conference marks, so give up on that one. That is something, honestly, that only hardcore stat geeks care about. It's hard enough to explain wind to the casual observer.

really??!! so if we seed an NCAA basketball team based on their games against JCs, that'd be OK?

Well, the one good thing about track, is that it doesn't matter what you did before, or what someone thinks or says that you did or can do. It only matters what you do on the day, no judges and no style points, just head to head and either you get it done or you don't. I believe all this will be settled at the Pac-10 Meet itself, then at regionals, then at nationals.

The (w) does indeed matter because you need to qualify for Regionals (or nationals for 10,000/Multis).

I think that any seeding that is done in the BigTen is based on acceltable marks, not wind-aided ones.

Just looked at the BigTen list; there are even notations on converted marks what the actual mark was and the location (as was done in the w3000SC where an altitude mark was adjusted). I suspect that the list that they keep is for marks (actual or adjusted as appropriate) that qualify for NCAAs/Regionals.

This is just too funny. Well, as the above poster stated, it will all get settled on the track anyways.

It will get settled on the track and that's a good thing. What's not good is some athletes will have already "qualified" for regionals with a mark that was assisted by a 4.7 wind. Additionally, it makes extra work for me trying to dope it on my blog, as well as having to answer hate mail with irate fans telling me what a jerk I am because I don't think their guy/gal is going to win XYZ race.

Oft read remark "hey buddy, you are an idiot, can't you even read their listed times...."

I'm glad to hear the Big 10 is doing it the proper way, maybe they can have a little chat with their PAC 10 counterparts.

As long as we're discussing misleading information from the Pac-10 Conference, their press release yesterday:

                      http://www.pac-10.org/sports/c-track/sp ... 07aae.html

repeatedly refers to Galen Rupp as a sophomore. As he competed in the 2005 & 2006 Pac-10 meets, I think he must be a junior this year.

Of course, some critics of his personal coach might just figure this is an evil plot by Beaverton to get him a free extra year.
