    Re: Webb to race again

More on the Manchester race. I note that it has almost been a week since the last Webb post.

"Wolde was the silver medalist in the 5,000-meters in the 2001 World Championships. His best time for that distance is 12:59. He is also a former world junior cross-country champion. Wolde joins a field that includes American running sensation Alan Webb and defending champion Andrew Letherby."

    Re: Webb to race again

I find this whole Alan Webb obsession really fascinating. His big crime was running a great mile in high school and getting the hopes up of a nation of desperate distance geeks. After his Prefontaine race you current Webb-haters all wanted to believe he was the second coming of Christ. Well, he wasn't then and he's not now. But somehow people have formed an emotional attachment to the performances of this poor bastard. He should have announced his retirement from track after his Prefontaine mile, and then quietly gone about his training in peace. The next time you pathetic losers feel the need to rip this guy for not living up to the billing YOU gave him, ask yourself this simple question; What noteworthy thing have YOU done lately in track and field?

We continually blast this guy because he made the huge mistake of running too fast, too young. Now the expectations of 'unrealized potential' compel us to want more NOW, NOW, NOW. Give him some time and space and he'll be fine. We just need to think of something else to bitch about for a while.

    Re: Webb to race again

It is silly hating a guy because he is not performing. He does not owe US track fans anything.

It is strange how much better Nick Willis is doing at Michigan. Willis's 3:36 pr this summer is not bad for a 21 year old. I thought Webb would be at least 3:36 guy by now.

I believe Webb must first hit the 3:55 mile barrier before he can get back on track.

Nobody knows if he will make the Olympic team next year. He will most certainly have to run faster than his post high School PR of 3:58 to make the US team.

What worries me is that Webb will fall into the same trap as other elite US milers in that they peak in their mid to late 20s. If this is so than Webb and Sage will will be battling it out in the 2008 trials.

Webb will eventually run a 3:50 mile. Besides nearly everyone improves on their high school time.

why does he deserve a break. because you say so. you people get on here and talk about the unimpressive things this kid did in high school. so what!! he will never make an olympic team or probaly a world team. If yall are gonna talk about someone young and up and coming, try Justin gatlin or this high school girl, you know athletes who are actually good at their event

Tafnut, thank you for expressing my feeling exactly. I hope he has a solid year and then continues to build on it. Webb has suffered some tough adversity for the past 2 years and deserves to break though it....

I really hope he has a great year, if only to quiet the pack of hounds baying at his heels.

    Has it come to this.

Is Webb indeed a mediocre professional.

    Hmmm, 2003 times, 3:59, 4:02, 4:05, 1:50, 3:58....

    Yep, he is mediocre now.

Is he the next Steve Scott. Well no, he is not even the next Tom Byers. Read the running 3:49 thread where they are talking about real milers. Those American runners in the post Prefontaine era knew how to race.
