Lead car in last year:s Göteborgs-Varvet (21,1km) veered off course and winner, Abdelkader El Mouaziz (1.02.14) and two others wound up running 80m shorter in distance than did fourth-place finisher Pavel Loskutov.
"The lead race car was diverted off the 10K course at the two-mile mark when police blocked the entrance to the Shoreway at West Third Street and Lakeside Avenue, causing 200 to 300 runners -- including the elite men and women -- to run anywhere from 800 yards to 2.7 miles extra while in the Flats.''
Wasn:t comparing them. Lead cars sometimes veer off course, and, consequently, top athletes lose out on an opportunity to finish with decent (or legal) times. Göteborgs-varvet fourth-placer wanted the top-three DQ:d.
i used my handy dandy tafnews conversion book to figure it out. it was the cleveland 14.3k. ridiculous.
PRs all around! But seriously, that would be unpleasant, to say the least.
This incident for some reason reminded me of some of my experiences roadracing when I was living in Taiwan -- Every road race I entered was advertised as "12km," but they varied by a lot -- you had to prepare yourself for courses that were anywhere from 10-15k, some perhaps with more variation. I got caught by surprise at both extremes -- trying to measure out a hard effort, and then discovering the finish line much earlier than expected, or much much later than expected, and not knowing where it was.
