IAAF NUMBER ONES HEADLINE THROWS AT PRE
Eugene, Oregon--The No.1 throwers on the IAAF World Rankings list in the men's shot put and women's javelin throw will compete in the 2007 Prefontaine Classic Grand Prix on June 10th at Hayward Field.
Shot-meister Christian Cantwell, winner last weekend in a world-leading 72 feet 3/4 of an inch (21.96m) faces Reese Hoffa, last year's No. 1 as ranked by Track & Field News. Challenging them in this crowd-favorite event will be two-time Olympic silver medalist and reigning World Champion Adam Nelson. Joined by world No. 8 Dan Taylor and comebacking multi-medalist John Godina, the Prefontaine Classic field boasts the top five throwers in the world thus far in 2007.
On the women's side, the field will feature the Czech Republic's Barbora Spotakova, who broke through last year to climb to the top of the IAAF World Rankings with a best mark of 217-2 (66.21m). She will be challenged by American Recordholder Kim Kreiner, who upped her own national record for the sixth time to 210-7 (64.19m) on May 16th ; Dane Christina Scherwin, now living and training in Eugene, who ranked No. 6 in the world last year by T&FN; and Spaniard Mercedes Chilla, who ranked No 7 in the world. A wild-card entry will be American discus recordholder Suzy Powell, who is looking to become an unusual world-class doubler in the throws. Powell was the Pac-10 champion with the spear while at UCLA. With three of the world's top 10, and America's premier thrower, the Pre Classic javelin field will be the best on American soil since the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.
The Nike Prefontaine Classic will be televised live on NBC from 1 to 3 p.m. PT on June 10th
