Re: Magness as HS-only miler: wow!

That was something that always bugged me about Webbs record was where he ran it. I mean if had run it in a a state race or some high school chmapionship, then I wouldn't have taken a second look at it, but he ran it in a national and International class race with the El G and the like so it was as bad as a rabitted race. Magness really came out of know where for people who aren't fimiliar with Texas running. Hope he races Bobby Curtis or someone who is know well very soon!!

Actually, far more impressive to me than it being a HS-only race is that he led wire-to-wire, with people breathing down his neck. Wonder what he could do in an El G "rabbited" race....

Over 20 years ago I saw Rudy Chapa win the Indiana State meet in about 4:05..... I guess that was for 1600 m and did not quite make the list ?

Chapa led the high school mile list in '76 at 4:05.8; not quite good enough to crack the list at the head of this thread.

this may have been mentioned earlier, but where is Steve Magness going to college next year?

Thanks for the reply. Chapa had a total solo run that day, no one else even close to him.

Very interesting list. Remember that Ryun's 3:58.3 was rabbited by teammate Mike Petterson, who later went to Kansas State. Petterson went c.3:00 through three laps, then fell back and wound up running (I think) 4:10.8. At least, that's how I remember this, and I don't have the materials at hand to verify it.

Re: Magness as HS-only miler: wow!

Regarding the suggestion that the Texas folks run a mile instead of the 1600 at the state meet:

Mike Stahr, then a junior at Carmel(NY) H.S., was looking to run a fast mile at the 1982 Eastern States meet at St.John's, but officials were putting on the "immensely popular" (as I wrote in Eastern Track) 1600-meters.

That didn't stop a group of renegades, led by ringleader Larry Byrne, from measuring past the finish and pinpointing the mile mark.

Larry then informed Stahr that if he ran past the 1600 finish, a group of us (we had at least three timers), would get his mile time.

Mike went through the first 1/4 in 60.7, and with the help of Charlie Marsala(New Dorp), who pushed him through the next two laps(2:05.4, 3:09.1), his blazing kick brought him across the 1600 line in 4:05.7 and the mile in 4:07.0. That would wind up as the 3rd best in the country for the year and was the best by a junior. Marsala finished 2nd in 4:11.4.

The late Joe Fox, a legendary figure in NYC prep circles, who was the meet director, was furious when he found out what we had done and wanted to run us out of the stadium.

Now I'm not suggesting they do this in Texas, but.......

That site is nice, but to truly follow what Steve does you have to look at this site-

Actually, Petterson never led in the race but pushed Ryun through the half. Splits for Ryun were 58.3, 2:00.8, 3:02.6. I'm pretty sure Petterson attended Kansas not K-State.

                          Tenn. HS 1600 record broken

                          http://www.knoxnews.com/kns/glv_other_s ... 95,00.html

Figured I'd better not start a new thread with this. But since the topic was the HS mile, I thought I'd add it here.

                          U. of Tennessee signee Dusty Miller of Knoxville broke ex-Vol Tony Cosey's state record in the 1600 m. Story at above link.

                            Steve's going to Rice ...

... and isn't it cool that he's posting? DyeStat folks have known him for years as a quality guy online. How many other prep ultra-elites have EVER posted on boards (non-anonymously) these last few years?

Never say never. While we've never invited more than one high school miler to compete in the Bowerman Mile at the Prefontaine Classic, this year is the exception. Mike McGrath of Lincoln HS in Portland ran 4:05.28 in the Bill McChesney Jr. Memorial Twilight Mile tonight, finishing 2nd in very windy and rainy conditions. Steve Magness ran wire-to-wire in the equivalent of a 4:02.99 mile. Both deserve the opportunity to compete, so both will be issued invitations. Steve, I'll be emailing your coach tomorrow to see if you are still interested. Congratulations.

Way to go Pre Classic! Thanks for the support of high school track. Magness did it the old fashion way... running well for his team. Not jetting all over the country in a vain attempt to get a race. These milers like Perkins, Curtis, Deak who seem to be very where, but home, have lost what high school track should be. Learn your craft, prove yourself and then get recognized.
