Why not just start the race 9 meters behind the rest of the field at the Mile starting line, and actually cover the full mile distance. Sure, it would put him at a disadvantage to the other runners by having to run extra distance over the field, but if "breaking 4" is that important and realistic, he should not worry about giving an additional 1+ second head start to his competitors (as a hs runner breaking 4 has little chance of being beaten). Actually, that extra 1+ second would be made up quite easily as he would likely be in the same position at the end of the first lap wheteher he started at the 1600m start line or the mile start line.

"Officially" his time would be for 1600m since that was the official race distance for the meet, but all it takes is a few eye witnesses to ensure that he actually covered a full mile to convince the masses.

Now whether the officials will actually allow him to start the race standing 9 meters behind everyone else is a whole different story.

erik stanley of texas went 405 low for the converted mile in the same race magness ran. his 405 was lower than macgraths 405 and it was in a high school only race. not to say that he isnt legit but something tells me mcgrath is getting some oregon SLACK...

Pre's meet organizers would be stupid not to cut McGrath a little slack. Plus Stanley is a junior, McGrath a senior.

Bad way to get someone to run a full mile. You're introducing the handicap race to the list, which creates its own set of problems and wouldn't be acceptable for record status.

It looks like we'll get to see Magness and McGrath go head-to-head at least once this season. So you can "predict" all you want I'll look forward to seeing them toe the line.

Question for Mr. Magness, since he frequents this board from timeto time:

do you care at all about whether or not you beat McGrath, or is the pursuit of a sub-4:00 (which certainly isnt' the same thing) paramount?

Well obviously I'd like to do both. However I'm going to the Pre meet to go after a sub 4. I'm going to run as hard as I can and whatever happens happens.

Fantastic attitude! I'll be there breaking the no-cheering-in-the-press-box rule (just like I did for Sage in '00 and Webb in '01) and cheering for both of you.

                          Good luck!

Pacesetters for the race are Simon Kimata (1:46), and David Kiptoo (best rabbit in the world). Currently 16 in the field, with several 3:55 guys on the waitlist. Stay loose!

That's the spirit, Magness. After what you did in a prep only race, there's no doubt you have the ability to break 4. All the best!

                                Steve,

Great race in Austin. I ran high school track in the mid 70's (before you were born) when 100 mile weeks were not uncommon. I never came close to running your times, but have been following track long enough to appreciate the significance of your times. At the same time I was running, I developed an interest in photography. I have kept up that interest through the years in addition to the daytime job. I covered your race specifically for Inside Texas Running Saturday night. If you would like pictures from the race send me your email address and I will forward some your way, free of charge.
