  • No mention of Castlin's effort

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the run of Virginia Tech's Kristi Castlin at the East regionals.

She ran 12.91 (+1.8) for the 100mH which according to Tilastopaja makes her the #4 junior all-time and is a new US Jr record. She broke the US marks of Candy Young (1979) & Cinnamon Sheffield (1989) - 12.95.

She only needs to improve 0.08 to break Aliuska López's long-standing WJR.

    Can she do it?

She's already run a windy 12.82 (+2.1) back in April...

By the way, Virginia Tech and USATF seem oblivious to any milestone being broken...

    From the Virginia Tech website:
"....Castlin's 12.91 finish broke the four-year old meet record, en route to earning the event's title. Castlin's time was also the fastest-ever ran by anyone 19-and-under, setting a new American Junior Record."

(Don't know if that was written right after the meet or after someone brought it to their attention)

Well, I certainly missed it. But it's great and exciting news. Especially considering what VT has been through. Here's to hoping she runs 12.6!

I have to cop to having been blissfurlly ignorant of her. Not even 19 until July. Ran 13.85 as a junior, 13.73 last year. Then this (courtesy Tilastopaja):

          GO HOKIES!!!
Kristi is a great athlete and she is in a great program. Coach Johnson is really putting in a lot of work down here in Blacksburg, VA. ACC Champs and East Regional Champs. These ladies are really flying under the radar but i am sure they dont mind. It keeps them hungry! Plus Walter Dix's 19.69 kinda over shadowed everything this weekend. I saw Kristi yesterday and i did not find out about the AJR until this morning.
          GO HOKIES!!

Didn't see that there yesterday when I looked. She's also got some kudos from USATF now too (in their "Athlete of the Week" press release - which someone called Walter Dix won):

"Another notable performance was turned in by Virginia Tech freshman Kristi Castlin, who ran 12.91 seconds in setting an American Junior record in the women's 100m hurdles in Gainesville. The previous record of 12.95 was held by Candy Young and Cinnamon Sheffield from 1979 and 1989 respectively."

You mean getting a jump that wins you the Olympic gold medal? Yeah, bummer.

You've just put your finger on a perfect example of the difference between stats-oriented people and competition-oriented people. We've had this discussions in many forms on many threads. It's unimaginable to you and me that anyone could think of Conley's performance as worthy of a verb symbolizing failure and frustration. But there are people out there who think that way. I think they are missing something (like the most important, essential, aspect of the sport).
