  • Happy Birthday

Just wanted to wish the world record holder in the men's long jump, Mike Powell, a very happy 40th birthday this past Monday. Looking ahead a bit, I wish Gabriela Szabo, the gold medalist in the women's 5,000 at Sydney, a very happy 28th birthday this Friday. Any comments on these two outstanding athletes in the field and on the track?

Powell handled both his disappointments and his WR with class... a first rate credit to the sport IMHO.

Kudos to Szabo for being one of the few European long-distance runners to be able to mix it up with the Africans. (I know, there are others; Radcliffe, etc.) Good for diversity, and she's a joy to watch, not only her inimitable style, but her never-say-die kicks -- she ran down someone this past summer from far back, by just not giving up (sorry I can't remember which race).

I wonder if we'll see Mike at some Masters meets. Anyone know off the top of their heads what the masters record for the LJ is?

Powell qualifying for the Olympic team in '88 Indianapolis trials on the last jump of the competition is one of those unforgettable memories.

Myricks and Lewis both at 8.50.

Whoops. That was the over 35 record.

Masters record is 7.57 by Hans Shicker.
