  • Letters to the Editor

I have a suggestion for Gary Hill re Letters to the Editor in the print version of Track and Field News, which is that he should refrain from commenting on letters.

The whole point of having a Letter to the Editor section is to give readers a chance to comment on something that they feel is important.

By allowing Mr. Hill to comment on their comment defeats the purpose of exercise.

Mr. Hill not only comes off as rude and sometimes petty, he most likely discourages writers from submitting Letters to the Editor.

Sometimes, Mr. Hill, it just makes more sense to let a point go without trying to win it or justity your own point of view.

If you want to run a monarchy, then I suggest that you eliminate letters to the editor.

Now, please do yourself a favor, and do not respond to this.

I personally like the occasional editorial reply. Gives more of an insight into what they were thinking when they wrote the original piece being commented on. It also gives it more of a 'personal' touch and not the image that the magazine is produced by a bunch of nameless, faceless automatons.

I'm with Asterix - I like the replies. If you want antiseptic LTTE read TIME magazine. One of the charms of the T&FN is that is less formal or pretentious.

Gary Hill's comments smack of somebody who just can't resist getting the last word in.

so? As irrascible, irreverent and sacrcastic as he can be, the magazine has a personality because he DOES get the last word. (My game, my ball). I'll talk spicy over bland any day.

that would be "I'll take" not 'talk' and BTW, I've been at the receiving end of his ire to which I infer more bark than bite.

People who don't have the courtesy to spell other people's names correctly should not be calling those people rude. It's Garry, as in Barry.

By the way, I, too, agree with Asterix. I suspect that the vast majority of T&FN's readers feel the same way.

I believe that TAFN staff are completely out of touch with their reader's sensibilities. I finally let my subscription run out when a friend pointed to a neatly stacked pile of TAFN on my coffee table, still protected by shrink-wrap, to which I responded, "It's the same old stuff every month, nothing new."

When you lose the hard-core fans as subscribers what chance to you have at the occasional fan?

Really - what are you smoking? How can it be the same old stuff when new stars are constantly emerging, journeymen have breakthroughs, great champions go head-to-head, and the back stories are constantly fraught with human interest? Are you sincerely the most jaded person on the planet? I have only subscribed since 1971, but I can tell you I tear open the white envelope (by the way - why are yours shrink-wrapped? Are you confusing T&FN with RW?) and read it cover-to-cover the first day I get it.

Five years ago it came shrink-wrapped. Haven't subscribed since and haven't read RW since it went to the Oprah crown in the late 70s.
