  • Texas XC champs

The Woodlands High School was utterly dominant at the Texas state championships yesterday -- 35 points (more than 60 ahead of the next school), and the AVERAGE time of its runners for the 5K course was 15:52! Pretty staggering -- I was (and 18 years later, still am) the best distance runner in the history of my small-town high school, and I likely wouldn't have even made varsity at the Woodlands.

Class 5A results are at http://www.uil.utexas.edu/ath/ccstate/5a.html. Other classes are at http://www.uil.utexas.edu/ath/ccchamp.html

    Re: Texas XC champs

The Woodland, formerly McCollough HS of Conroe Independent School DZist. in Texas has the fortune as well as luxury of a long-time coach, Dan Green who came from the area, deeply cares about both the sport and his athletes (normal traits for successful X-C coaches) and works in an area of families who frequently all run for fun in the tall pine-forests of this side of the East Texas pinewoods. Dan has made such a record and tradition of distance running in a part of the USA known best for heat, humidity and smog, that he has the delightful "problem" of almost too many candidates for his teams. He still runs the Houston Marathon every January and has produced a large number of successful
    X-C coaches in the area.
