  • Defar World Record That Went Unnoticed

ok, so it's a "World Record"..... T&FN correspondent Mark Butler notes this from Oslo

    11:29.44
    (world best for 4000m, previously
    11:30.43 Abeylegesse Bergen 2004)

She probably broke the 4500m record too.

Actually, not to be a wiseacre (I'm trying to turn over a new leaf), I've always liked the idea of the 4000. One would think that it "should" be the perfect metric race: a nice even 10 laps of the track. We've talked in the past as to who could have been the first 10-flat guy (probably Komen in '96 or '97, although Geb could have come close, too; I seem to recall that they went thru in 10:06 in the 12:45 race in Zurich in '96).

Trust Mark to come up with that obscure statistic.

Then there's nothing to break. If a runner flits by in the forest and nobody sees it, there was no runner. Flits by what? Falls on what? What tree? What runner? Elementary and ligamentary, Watson, our runs through wooded paths are figmentary.

I would guess that if Koman had run a 4000 rather than a 3000 that night he would have gotten under 10, but the next performance at that level in a non-championship distance has not been reached.

OK, I fixed the typo -- my fingers have some problems and do not always depress the keys -- Firefox provides a built-in spell checker that helps me correct errors but it cannot catch those -- you need the board for that.

And we're still waiting for a pale sprinter to break 10 for 100.

I didn't realize he was THAT slow at the shorter distances!

slight side-track, but paula's solo manchester run is worth mentioning :

                      1km - 2:59.91

                      2km - 5:53.56 (2:53.65)

                      3km - 8:48.04 (2:54.48)

                      4km - 11:40.34 (2:52.30)

                      5km - 14:31.42 (2:51.08)

( she ambled the 1st 600m so that is why the initial km is slow, but from 600m she shot off )

last 4km adds upto : 11.31.51 which was solo & i have no doubt she couda run 1st slow km at similar pace =

                      ~ 14'24.39 solo !

4k as a race distance is not completely unprecedented. The Ohio HS cross country distance was 2.5 miles from about '77 to '82, and that's basically 4k.

Even quicker (by some way) is Wang. If you take her 10k WR, the first 1000 was run in 2:54.7, while the last 3k took 8:17.5 - total = 11:12.2
