  • Mr C Jackson: Time to go?

Ok you Americans have had your annual rant about Carol Lewis' crimes against athletics commentating. Now it's us Brits turn.

We thought after the John Regis/Cathy Freeman nadir of BBC commentating things were taking an upturn. Phil Jones and especially Jonathan Edwards have been definite positives in recent years and the rest of the team have been doing great work for years, so why oh why are we still having to endure the inane ramblings of Colin Jackson. This is one quote from Sunday about Chris Clark's WY 400m win..............

'We've got a good history of 400m running in this country, especially at this age group, so it's really great that they can actually see them continuing this winning, winning really thing"

    Anyone????

Ok so he hasn't quite reached Regis like depths of incomprehension but he's not far away. Please put us all out of oir misery and get rid of him before the worlds. After all he's got that thriving coaching career that he need to be concentrating on.

Re: Mr C Jackson: Time to go?

Personally, I always think watching Sue Barker and Colin Jackson is like watching a tremendously bad episode of Will and Grace but jokes aside, he should have never got the job anyway. I find him patronising, sometimes overly optimistic and he puts on a tone of voice akined to a kiddies TV programme plus he knows very little about any of the events.

However, I'm just a bit worried that I might struggle to stay awake at the World Championships, if I have to be subjected to a dose of Brendan Fosters' monotone voice.

Paul Dickenson was funny during his commentary in the w3000m in Sheffield. ''Cheruiyot is looking very comfortable at the front.'' Well that doesn't bloody surprise me considering she has only been running for 9 seconds  but generally speaking, I like his commentary although I do get him confused with Stuart Storey...still!

However, it is quite funny when Michael Johnson slaughters Colin, when he comes up with a stupid comment or prediction!

BTW, I wasn't an athletics fan during the time when Regis and Freeman graced the BBC. Apparently, Cathy just looked confused and stoned whenever she was asked a question but can you give me some examples of what John was like?

Jackson is a hopeless person as a ...... whatever he purports to be on TV. That man is all over the media like a bad rash; interviewer, commenter, coach???, dancing queen, yes I mean queen. I am sick to death of him.

Dickenson should have been put out to grass years ago complete with his ridiculous cliches, together with the other guy who sounds exactly like him

. Brendan is now a first rate, stale bore.

The only one ,imo, who has an informed opinion is MJ and for commentaries ,Crammy is still fresh and has a sense of humour.

Why does someone not ban them from the silly phrase '' close order''

i used to like ovett when he commented for itv in the early '90s - he was genuinely enthusiastic & added to already good races

i must ask though, why on earth hasn't shot alan parry by now ?

i have observed baboons in zoos who seem to be capable of more intelligent athletics commentary

i don't registering much of what regis did, but freeman appeared to have the brain of a 12y ole retarded schoolgal - she was complete shite !

sue : "cathy, that javelin thrower accidentally just speared that lj'er to death"

cathy : "oh yeah, real bad ( giggle giggle )"

sue : "who do you think will win this 400m women's race between guevara & the 7 muppets lined up against her"

cathy : "i don't know ( giggle giggle ) - is that schoolgal carrying ana's clothes in the box running against her ( giggle giggle ) ?"

sue : "have you mastered the use of dining utensils at a table"

            cathy : "what's a fork ( giggle giggle ) ?"

Well if that was the case, I wish the BBC didn't let go of her!

The standard of commentating on the BBC has fallen away badly in the last decade or so. Gone are the days when Ron Pickering and Stuart Storey could provide an informative, educational report on field events and none of them have the gravitas and drama of David "those blue eyes, like chips of ice" Coleman.
I did not like the reminder of John Regis, there was a broadcast from Edmonton in 2001 where he was sat in a studio with a frightened Sue Barker, Sally Gunnell and a, shall we say, frazzled Cathy Freeman. John was extolling the virtues of his athletes and describing some 200m heats in a manner that makes Colin Jackson's current interjections sound positively Shakespearean. Merely quoting them does not begin to do justice to the banality, topped off by his comstant grin.
Freeman meanwhile answered questions with some nervous giggles, numerous facial contortions and the occasional sigh, but i cannot remember if she actually put together a coherent sentence. The colour was draining from the face of Sue Barker as she saw her career disappearing down the toilet,
It showed that all great athletes do not make good broadcasters, if i had a choice for a knowledgable outsider i would plump for Andy Edwards, who usually gets the graveyard shift on Eurosport, but always sounds intelligent and informed.
Just to get you all back, what was the name of the bloke who did the commentaries on Channel 4 in England when they had the rights for a couple of years, he gave me some baaaaaaad dreams...

John rocked. His finest moment was this immortal mixed metaphor about the '02 Commonwealth men's 100m.

"We thought this was a 3 horse race, but now Kim Collins has thrown his hat in the ring for gold"

He also used to always refer to Abi Oyepitan as (And I don't exaggerate)............

                  Ibbyob Adibbydob.

There are loads more examples here

'He's going through the field like a hot knife through butter'

                    WTF!!

I get the picture but I can beat your Colin quote!

Does anyone remember Julian Golding commentating/being a pundit for British Eurosport at the World Championships in 2001? I had to ferret through my old tapes after reading this thread and this was during the women's marathon, and they were talking about the women's 5000m and Yegorova and this is what Golding said:

''...and they have seen her go, and she winned, she won, she won the World Championships!''

i like my commentary with some colour thrown in - nothing wrong in spicing things up !
