  • Attendance Record Equaled!

    Thanks to everyone who participated over the weekend (no self-congratulations involved: I picked a rather exciting weekend to go dark!). Ben tells me that even though the message board's front-page stats don't reflect it, Saturday we tied the concurrent-users record. And the average number of users for most of the wekened was also at record levels.

    Nothing like some major Alan Webb action eh?

    ps--you'll excuse me whilst I go dark again. While I was gone Amazon delivered my new Harry Potter! (I hear he runs 3:45 in this one :-) )

    Interesting. gh is offline from 9am Saturday through the rest of the weekend while tafnut hasn’t been heard from since noon on Saturday. This could mean:

    1. gh and tafnut are the same person.
    2. gh and tafnut had a wild fling in Cancun or somesuch. tafnut is still too exhausted to post.
    3. gh killed tafnut (who has yet to return).

    And while these two heavy hitters took leave, there was enough bandwidth freed up to allow the rest of the world to set attendance records here . . .

        Yes, a pole vaulter Amazon to confiscate his computer and put him in rehab for internet addiction. His rehab roommate, Andy Dick, has just beaten him up, and he's sitting on the ground, a la David Hasselhoff, eating a baloney sub off the floor, as he brags about his record number of posts, and the Boss belts out "Glory Days" on his stereo.

            No Amazon delivery for me. I had to go down to Borders to pick up my copy of the last Harry. Now I have to avoid all mention of the book in the media. This is complicated by a huge read pile, with the clock ticking on the Gore book and the latest J Patterson. As, technically, the Harry belongs to my grandson (the series is what made him a reader, to JKR), Mary & I decided to let the kid read the book first. We had always read them first (excuse, his B-day is in Oct), so he gets first shot. At least he won't be bugging us "are you done yet?".

              I hate to break it to you, but that number is heavily affected by bots crawling the site.

              Edit: at least the one on the front of the message board is. Maybe bh has a way of keeping track of the number of registered users, which would be much more accurate.

                Actually if you look at bot traffic that front page number is WAY low. Right now the front page says 31 users and there are 80+ user agents currently hitting the board. Most of those are bots. Since bots have fairly regular traffic patterns they should not actually effect the top end numbers much. I'll poke at the code and see how PHPBB is calculating it but off the top of my head I'd guess it is by unique IP & username combo.

                Edit: Code proves out my theory. Set being looped through is ordered by username, ip

                Code:
                                        // Skip multiple sessions for one user
                                        if ( $row['session_ip'] != $prev_session_ip )
                                        {
                                                $guests_online++;
                                        }

                  since we weren't talking absolute numbers, rather relative ones, number of bots (we dont' discriminate!) is irrelevant, assuming that traffic stays relatively constant. If the previous high was also botted, then it's still a tie, so still happy!

                  So thanks again to all who took the time to participate.

                    First we're forced to contend with HJ marks given in meters. Now we're subjected to, um, bots and PHPBB (whatever they are). What next? A critique of the shutter speeds and f-stops used in the Walter Dix cover photographs? :wink:

                        But what if the bots are huge Webb fans? 8)

                        So who died in the Potter book?

                          Peter Rabbit's father. He was cooked in Mrs. McGregor's pie.
