  • Kenya : Two juniors 'sneak out' to Gulf States

    And the beat goes on!!
    Story by CHRIS MUSUMBA
    Publication Date: 8/01/2007
Two junior long distance athletes who had been selected for this month’s Africa Junior Championships have allegedly sneaked out of the country for greener pastures in the Gulf States.

The two, Levi Matebo and Titus Masai, are feared to have travelled to the Gulf where they intend to change their citizenship. Subsequently, Athletics Kenya (AK) has dropped them from the Kenya team destined for the continental showcase to be held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, from August 9. AK chairman Isaiah Kiplagat said yesterday the two athletes were missing, adding that the body had information some local sub-agents had helped the duo sneak to the Gulf.

That's the really scary bit. This has been an ongoing problem in football (soccer) - kids in early or mid teens being shipped over (usually from Africa to Europe) by 'agents' with false promises and dumped if they don't cut it. It can amount to child trafficking. FIFA introduced tough rules to try to stop the practice, which seems to have abated a little.
